Donations needed for Christmas Brings Hope

Boxes are packed for delivery at a past Christmas Brings Hope event. Each year the community pitches in to help the charity deliver food boxes to approximately 1,000 needy families in Independence County. Brown paper sacks will be distributed in the Wednesday, Nov. 28 edition of the Guard to be filled and picked up Dec. 2 at homes inside the city limits, Denison Heights, Clearview, Riverview and Spring Valley neighborhoods. Bags may also be delivered to the fairgrounds Dec. 3-5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Officials with Christmas Brings Hope are hoping many residents will leave their porch lights on the weekend of Dec. 2 with plenty of nonperishable items on their doorsteps to collect.

Dexter Hollaway grabs bundles of papers at the Guard's new office at 400 Harrison St. to load into his vehicle. He has been a newspaper carrier since 2013, delivering to customers' homes from Bethesda to Melbourne, as well as to racks at businesses. On the hottest of days as well as the coldest, not to mention in rain and snow, he works hard at taking care of his customers.

Facebook's anarchy may be its downfall

I use it, but I hate it.
That's how I feel about Facebook.
Unlike most things you hate, it's actually pretty difficult to just ditch Facebook.
Why?
Because it (and to a lesser or equal extent, Twitter) has become integral to how we stay in touch. . .
