Watermelon Festival gearing up

Chad Graves sent us some beautiful photos from the Johnson Brothers watermelon patch taken on July 3. "The Johnson Brothers have been watermelon farmers for 42 years. When Phillip was 13 his dad passed away and Phillip did not want the harvest to go to waste so he went to work," Graves said. "I sure enjoyed taking some pictures and hearing their story."

Independence Promise program launched

Independence County Public Education Foundation Chairman Dr. Brian Shonk explains why this community needs a Promise program and what led the board to this model because "the No. 1 handicap we have found in students pursuing higher education or training is financial barrier." He went on to say that the program will focus on equitable financial access to educational opportunities, shortening time from high school graduation to workforce entry, and partnerships that allow students to graduate career or college ready.
