Razorback softball coach resigns

May 29, 2009 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Jamie Pinkerton has resigned as Arkansas softball coach.Pinkerton went 130-179 in his five seasons with the Razorbacks. Arkansas went 27-29 this season and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.“At this point in my career, I feel it is time to pursue other opportunities,” Pinkerton said. “I wish Arkansas softball well in the future and will always consider it an honor to have been a part of the Razorback program.”

All-state player signs with Lyon

May 29, 2009 Helen Zyjewski, a 5-foot-5 catcher-first baseman from Greenwood, recently signed to play softball for Lyon College, according to a news release.Zyjewski hit .574 in her senior season at Greenwood High and was a 3-time all-state and a 4-time all-conference player during her career.

Lady Pioneer named to all-state team

May 29, 2009 Senior shortstop Wendy Dozier represents Batesville High on the Class 5A All-State roster.While hitting a team-high .400 batting average, Dozier delivered four doubles, 15 runs batted in and scored 21 runs for the 9-13 Lady Pioneers.

All-state softballers include 4-time selection

May 29, 2009 This year’s Arkansas Activities Association all-state softball lists include 10 selections from Guard-circulation area high schools and seven are newcomers.The returners are Maggie Jo Cooper of Melbourne, Sarah Taylor of Izard County and Raigan Skidmore of Midland.Skidmore is a 4-time selection to the Class 2A squad. Taylor, a senior, is on the Class 1A roster for the third time and Cooper, a sophomore, is two for two on the same roster.

Two Lyon baseball players recognized at national level

May 28, 2009 Lyon College seniors Justin Cunningham and Sam Neal were named to the 2009 Daktronics All-American Scholar Athletes baseball squad, according to a press release from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics home office.Neal, a right fielder, led the Scots in home runs (14) and RBI (59) with a .347 average at the plate this season. The selection to the all-academic squad is Neal’s second.Cunningham. a third baseman, hit .391 with 25 RBI in 25 starts. The selection to the scholar athlete squad is his first.

Pioneer leads local high school athletes in decathalon, heptathlon competitions

May 28, 2009 CABOT — Batesville High School’s Price Holmes is running 18th and leads a contingent of five Guard-circulation area athletes after the first day of the Arkansas high school decathlon and heptathlon.Holmes, a senior, scored 3,238 points in the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash. Ethan Turpen, a senior from Lake Hamilton, leads the event with 4,120 points.Donnie Cooper and Christian Manna, both juniors from Southside, are 27th and 43rd, respectively.

BMS racing resumes Friday

Batesville Legion teams feature veterans, rookies

May 28, 2009 The obvious assessments of Batesville’s American Legion baseball teams are these: The Highwaymen have been down this road many times before, and the Bankers are new to the business.Citizens Bank, the 1A Division team, is scheduled to play first. The Bankers, with only one player with Legion experience, are scheduled to face Dyersburg, Mo., at 7:30 Friday night at Arkansas State University’s Tomilinson Stadium in Jonesboro.
