Hillcrest seniors to host wrestling benefit Friday

November 5, 2009 The Hillcrest senior class is hosting a wrestling benefit at the Strawberry Gymnasium on Friday night, according to a news release.The card features two main events — a pony tail match between The Doc and Big Indian in which the loser must cut off his pony tail, and a Battle Royale which will be an every-man-for-himself fight with all the wrestlers on the card.Admission is $6. Children ages 6 to 9 will be admitted for $3 and admission is free for children ages 5 and younger. All proceeds benefit the Hillcrest senior class.

Cooper leads area foursome at Overall Golf Tournament

November 5, 2009 LITTLE ROCK — Melbourne golfer Sam Cooper shot a 6-over-par 78 and finished tied for eighth in the boys Overall Tournament at Pleasant Valley Country Club on Wednesday.Cooper’s teammate Bradley Lamb tied for last place with an 89. Luke Carpenter of Arkansas Baptist won the event with a 1-under 71.In the girls division, Izard County’s Kiley Mettler and Rachel Harmon were well off the pace. Mettler fired an 88 while Harmon struggled to a 94. Conway’s Summar Roachell won with a 79.

November 4, 2009 CALICO ROCK — The home teams won two of three against Melbourne here Tuesday night.The Calico Rock Lady Pirates won 63-48 as Sloan Lively scored 16 points, Taylor Cox added 14 and Brittany Fountain chipped in 13. The Lady Pirates improved to 5-1.For 1-2 Melbourne, Maggie Cooper scored 15 points and Kaylee Ables added 10.The Melbourne Bearkatz won 61-50 as Spencer Caraway scored 16 points, Sam Cooper added 11, and Dalton Grigg and Cody Cooper added 10 apiece. The ’Katz are 2-1.

Cave City, Southside hoop teams scheduled to tip off this weekend

November 4, 2009 Cave City and Southside will tip off their basketball seasons this weekend with scrimmages.The annual Cave City Red-White intrasquad scrimmages are scheduled to get started at 5 Friday evening. All teams will participate and play one half. The seventh-graders are scheduled to lead off.Russell Fowler, Cave City’s athletic director and senior girls coach, said the price of admission is a towel and or detergent.

November 4, 2009 East Poinsett County Coach Brian Weathers said the Warriors are in good spirits for this Thursday night special in Newark.“Now, I’m not going to tell you it hasn’t slowed down some, but this is a young group with a lot of energy, so the enthusiasm is pretty good,” the coach said. “We’re trying to incorporate a few new things and keep things interesting.”Ditto, Cedar Ridge Coach Todd Lovell said this morning. “We had a pretty fun practice yesterday, and today we’re going to go in full pads again. We don’t normally do that on the day before a game.”

Cavemen to play for 3A-3 title

November 4, 2009 The Cave City Cavemen will be playing for a share of the Class 3A-3 District championship when they host the Earle Bulldogs Thursday night.Less than a week ago, Cave City’s playoff hopes were in jeopardy. A 14-7 win over Hoxie punched the ticket and now Cave City (5-1 3A-3) is in a 3-way tie for the conference lead. Harrisburg (5-1) and Rivercrest (5-1) are the other teams vying for the title. Earle is 4-2 with losses to Harrisburg and Rivercrest.

Stingy Jr. Pioneers to host Cougar Cats

November 4, 2009 Regardless of the outcome Thursday night in Pioneer Stadium, the Batesville Junior Pioneers are the 5A-East District football champions. But don’t tell them that.“We want it outright,” Batesville Coach Doug Walls said.We’ll see how stingy the Junior Pioneers are when they host the Cougar Cats of West Helena for a season finale. Batesville clinched at least a share of the district title last week when it blanked Greene County Tech in Paragould. Wynne is second behind Batesville with a 5-1 conference record. Its lone loss was to 6-0 Batesville.
