Cavewomen take advantage of errors to beat Lady Southerners

April 5, 2010 SOUTHSIDE — The Cave City Cavewomen held off a pesky Southside Lady Southerner squad to collect a nonconference softball victory here Friday.Cave City led 11-1 after four and a half innings before settling for a 12-7 decision. Southside was three outs away from being run ruled, but put together three straight 2-run innings to make it interesting. Cave City’s power punch came in the top of the fourth inning, when it sent in five runs.The Lady Southerners (7-5) didn’t help themselves either with seven errors. Cave City was charged with three.

Freed-Hardeman battles to take two of three from Lyon

April 5, 2010 HENDERSON, Tenn. — Lyon sophomore Cory Ford hit safely in all three games here over the weekend to run this his 17th straight game but the Lyon College Scots dropped two of three to the Freed-Hardeman Lions.In Saturday’s finale of the 3-game TranSouth Athletic Conference series, Ford hit two for four. He has recorded a hit in 27 of the team’s 30 games this season. Jose Rivas holds the Lyon College record for a hitting streak with 26 during the 2005 season.

Tech downs rival for first Orange Crush crown

April 5, 2010 It was a 5A-East District and Paragould showcase in the Home Depot Orange Crush Classic large school championship game Saturday night at the Batesville North Complex.The Greene County Tech Lady Eagles collected their first Orange Crush title by beating the Paragould Lady Rams, their crosstown and district rivals, 6-2. Paragould was trying to win their second straight Orange Crush crown.Tech advanced to the final with two 1-run victories — 2-1 over Searcy and 3-2 over Central Arkansas Christian.Paragould reached by downing Marion 6-2 and Batesville 7-1.

Arkansas edges Kentucky with 9th-inning slam

April 5, 2010 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Collin Kuhn hit a grand slam in the ninth inning with two outs to lead Arkansas to a wild 17-16 win over Kentucky on Sunday.Arkansas (22-6, 6-3 Southeastern Conference) trailed by three going into the bottom of the ninth after giving up an 8-run lead to the Wildcats (18-11, 2-7). The Razorbacks were down to their last strike when Kuhn knocked in the game-winning grand slam.The 33 combined runs are the most scored at Baum Stadium since Arkansas beat Wisconsin-Milwaukee 28-2 in 2007.

April 2, 2010 BEEBE — The Batesville Lady Pioneers got back into the track and field winners circle here Thursday with a dominating performance at the Beebe Badger Relays.The Lady Pioneers won with 108 points — 46 better than second-place Little Rock McClellan 62. Fourteen teams competed in the annual event.

Cavewomen win in extra innings

April 2, 2010 FLIPPIN — The Cave City Cavewomen snuck out of Flippin with a 13-9, extra-innings win over the Lady Bobcats here Thursday evening. Cave City led 5-2 midway through the fifth inning, but a 4-run surge by Flippin made it 6-5 in favor of the home team with two innings to play.Down to their last two outs, the Cavewomen tied the game with a solo run in the seventh inning, forcing extra innings.Each team scored twice in the eighth inning and then Cave City won it with a 5-run ninth.
