Branstetter places 17th, Harmon finishes 20th in Overall golf event

October 18, 2010 LITTLE ROCK — Batesville’s Garth Branstetter and Izard County’s Preston Harmon finished 17th and 20th, respectively, in the Arkansas High School Overall Championships for golf at the Pleasant Valley Country Club here Thursday.Branstetter shot a 15-over-par 87 and Harmon shot a 90.Little Rock Catholic’s Matthew Mabrey won the boys title with an even-par 72. Kyle Cook finished second with a 73.The girls title was won by Clarksville’s Madsion Talley, who shot a 78. Conway’s Summar Roachell finished a stroke back.

Trojans overpower Southerners on Homecoming

October 18, 2010 SOUTHSIDE — The Marianna Trojans spoiled the Southside Southerners’ Homecoming Friday night with a 44-20 decision in a Class 4A-2 District meeting.Southside jumped ahead with a 69-yard drive on the opening possession. The drive took eight plays and was capped by a screen pass from Jared Dahl to Storm Tipton that went for 40 yards. The point-after kick was blocked.Lonoke responded and led 34-14 at halftime.Southside’s second score was a 6-yard, Dahl-to-Dustin Hurst pass in the second quarter.

Junior Timberwolves strike for another big district win

October 15, 2010 AUGUSTA — The Cedar Ridge Junior Timberwolves pulled down another 2A-3 District football top dog, and this time they did it on the road.The Junior T-wolves rallied past the Augusta Junior Red Devils for a 38-26 victory as Cody Powell scored three touchdowns, Brett Bell added two TDs and the Cedar Ridge defense shut down the home team in the second half.Augusta’s one score in the second half was a return of a Cedar Ridge fumble.

Roadrunners to choose director for White River 4-Mile Classic

October 15, 2010 The White River Roadrunners will select a race director for the 2011 White River 4-Mile Classic Road Race when they meet Tuesday night at the Citizens Bank Annex on College Street.The meeting is scheduled to being at 7. Members and guest can meet at the annex an hour earlier for a run.Along with their regular monthly meeting agenda, they will also discuss the Literacy Council and the 1040 Tax Run and plan for the club’s annual Christmas party.

Valley View sweeps Cave City

October 15, 2010 JONESBORO — Valley View swept nine games against Cave City here Thursday night.It ended with a 3-0 win in the senior high match. The home team won 25-5, 25-11 25-15.Rachel Roebuck (16 points, 12 blocks and 18 digs), Elisha Ramos (26 digs), Laura Basinger (five points and 10 digs) and Katie Freeman (five points and eight blocks) led Cave City’s effort.The Cavewomen fell to 11-13 overall and 4-10 in league play. They will play Hoxie Monday night for Senior night.

Lady Pioneers grab share of 5A-Central lead

October 15, 2010 The Batesville Lady Pioneers took a big step toward collecting the second of their three high school volleyball goals Thursday night at Pioneer Gym.The 3-1 victory over the Little Rock Christian Lady Warriors evened Batesville and LR Christian atop the 5A-Central Conference standings. If both teams win their district finale on Tuesday, they will share the conference title. That’s a first for Batesville High’s volleyball program.
