Lyon baseball finally plays home opener

February 14, 2011 After six failed attempts to host a baseball game at Scots Field, Lyon College finally broke through Sunday.The Scots improved to 4-0 with a nonconference doubleheader sweep of the Hillsdale Baptist Saints. Lyon won game one 19-0 in five innings and took game two 10-4.Garry Richards walked the first batter he faced in game one and then he and Colton McSpadden combined for a perfect game the rest of the way.

RedHawks pull away from Scots 103-80

Lyon women get back on winning track

February 14, 2011 The Lyon Scots womens basketball team ended a 2-game slump and avenged a 94-84 loss with a 76-73 win over the Martin Methodist RedHawks Saturday afternoon in Becknell Gymnasium.K.K. Hodges led a quartet of double-digit scorers for Lyon (13-11, 4-7) with 17 points. Freshman Rachel Shellenberger added 15, Phagen Altom netted 14 and Lauren Ramsey threw in 11. Hodges added eight rebounds and four assists, each a team high.

Batesville’s Moyer named driver of year

February 14, 2011 Billy Moyer was named the 2010 driver of the year by dirtondirt.com, a national website dedicated to dirt late model racing, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported in Sunday’s edition.The Batesville man is already a Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer. He won 24 feature races last year, including the World 100 and The Dream 100 at Eldora Speedway in Ohio. He also won the World of Outlaws $20,000-to-win feature at Farmer City Raceway in Illinois and swept the 3-night Knoxville Late Model Nationals and Knoxville, Iowa.

Snow keeps Hogs, LSU in Mississippi

February 11, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Winter weather across the South kept a pair of Southeastern Conference basketball teams on the road longer than planned on Thursday.Both Arkansas and LSU stayed in Mississippi following games on Wednesday night. The Razorbacks, who lost 67-56 to Mississippi State, made the decision to stay an extra night before the game against the Bulldogs because of heavy snow in Arkansas and expected snow in Starkville.

Organizer says arrive early for hall of famers

February 11, 2011 Arrive early for the Batesville Area Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction Ceremony on Saturday night.That was the advice of organizer Stuart Smith for the event’s 19th edition. It’s scheduled to begin at 6 at Western Sizzlin’ Restaurant and the meeting room in which it’s held seats 100.“We will start selling tickets at the door at 5:15,” he said. The $15 tickets were not sold in advance.The new hall of famers are Kim George Robinson, the late Kevin Wade Johnson and Dan Wright. Lyndal Waits will also receive the Estes Award — a community service award.
