Syracuse, Boeheim sued for defamation

December 14, 2011 NEW YORK (AP) — Jim Boeheim initially insisted two former Syracuse ball boys were lying when they accused his longtime assistant of molesting them.Now they’re suing the Orange men’s basketball coach and the university for defamation, saying he was the one making false statements.Stepbrothers Bobby Davis and Mike Lang have alleged they were molested by Bernie Fine, who has since been fired and has denied the allegations. A third man also has accused the 65-year-old Fine, who had been Boeheim’s top assistant since 1976.

Syracuse coach accuser arrested, jailed in Maine

December 14, 2011 LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — The Maine man who has accused a fortmer Syracuse University basketball coach of sexual assault and has himself been charged with child abuse offenses has been arrested for allegedly violating bail conditions.Lewiston police told the Sun Journal they arrested 23-year-old Zachary Tomaselli on Tuesday afternoon, a day after receiving a tip that he had given a car ride to a minor in violation of bail conditions.Tomaselli cannot have contact with anyone under 18, except for incidental contact at work.

December 14, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE — Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn is set to become the next coach at Arkansas State.A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday night, confirming earlier reports, that Malzahn will return to the state where he made a name for himself as a high school coach before leaving for college football.Arkansas State has scheduled a news conference for 3:30 this afternoon to introduce its new coach. Hugh Freeze, former Red Wolves coach, left the school last week to become the new coach at Mississippi.

December 13, 2011 PARAGOULD — The Paragould Junior Lady Rams and Junior Rams handed their counterparts from Batesville their first 5A-East District losses here Monday night.The Paragould junior girls won 41-23 and the Junior Rams won the nightcap 43-31.The Junior Lady Pioneers led 7-6 after one quarter of play. The Junior Lady Rams led 22-11 and 30-17 at the next quarter breaks.

December 13, 2011 SOUTHSIDE — The Southside Lady Southerners collected a key 4A-2 District basketball victory here Monday night, and they rallied from 17 down to to it.After Jordan Hicks’ 25-foot 3-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation tied the score at 42 and capped the rally, the Lady Southerners hit 11 of 12 free throws in overtime to defeat the Lonoke Lady Jackrabbits 53-46.Lonoke led 14-8, 29-16 and 34-28 at the quarter breaks. The 17-point deficit came in the first half.

’Hounds outscore Pioneers 25-3 in final 6 minutes, rally for win

December 13, 2011 It wasn’t pretty at any point, and it got downright ugly for the Batesville Pioneers during the last six minutes in Pioneer Gymnasium Monday night.The Pioneers led 32-22 with six minutes to play, and lost 47-35 to the Newport Greyhounds in a non-conference high school basketball game.During that fateful six minutes, the Pioneers committed six turnovers, hit just one of five shots and put the Greyhounds on the free-throw line eight times — five times when Batesville was leading — gave up several offensive rebounds, and saw their leader, Tanner Ring, foul out.

Accepting job offer was quick call, says new Hog defensive coordinator

December 13, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE — Paul Haynes didn’t need much time to decide about leaving Ohio State to become Arkansas’ defensive coordinator.Following a phone call from Razorbacks Coach Bobby Petrino, a simple conversation with his family was all Haynes needed to affirm his desire to coach in the Southeastern Conference and reunite with Petrino, whom he coached alongside in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars.Haynes was hired at Arkansas on Friday night and introduced Monday. He replaces former defensive coordinator Willy Robinson, who resigned last week.

December 12, 2011 One high school basketball team remained unbeaten and another evened the score with two opponents as the final two rounds of the Lyon College Tournament played out in Becknell Gymnasium this past weekend.The Cedar Ridge Timberwolves improved to 14-0 with a 51-43, semifinal victory over the Harding Academy Wildcats on Friday and a convincing 58-35 win over the Cave City Cavemen in the title game on Saturday. It was the second Lyon title for the T-wolves. Their first one came in 2007.
