Astin wins SEC award

February 21, 2012 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Arkansas pitcher Barrett Astin is being honored for his performance over the weekend.Southeastern Conference officials announced Monday that Astin was named player of the week after throwing five hitless innings, a career high, and striking out seven in Sunday’s game against Villanova.Astin has a 6-2 record with three saves and a 2.51 earned-run average in 28 appearances, including four starts.Astin and the rest of the Razorbacks return to the field today and Wednesday for a 2-game homestand against Northwestern State.

Baffert-trained pair sweep SW Stakes

February 21, 2012 HOT SPRINGS — Bob Baffert didn’t stop with just one Kentucky Derby hopeful.A pair of Baffert-trained horses, Castaway and Secret Circle, won both divisions of the $250,000 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park on Monday.Jockey Rafael Bejarano rode both horses to the wins in the mile Derby prep race, which was split into two divisions after 21 horses were entered. Baffert wasn’t on hand for the wins, but the trainer left his mark on the day in front of a crowd of 29,313.

Scots, Fighting Saints split two more 1-run battles

February 21, 2012 The Lyon College Scots and Saint Francis Fighting Saints battled through another pair of 1-run games and split another doubleheader Monday at Scots Field.The Scots took the opener by a 3-2 count. The visitors from Joliet, Ill., won the extra-inning nightcap by the same score.On Sunday, Lyon had, again, won the opener by a 3-2 score, and Saint Francis won the nightcap 4-3.

February 21, 2012 STARKVILLE (AP) — Mississippi State’s once-promising season has been derailed by a surprising three-game losing streak.Now conversations about a deep run in the NCAA Tournament have suddenly turned into a debate if the Bulldogs (19-8, 6-6 Southeastern Conference) can make the tournament at all.And things don’t get any easier when No. 1 Kentucky (26-1, 12-0) comes to town tonight, bringing its 18-game winning streak and multiple NBA prospects to Humphrey Coliseum.“I’ve seen a lot of Kentucky teams and this may be as good as I’ve seen,” coach Rick Stansbury said.

New rules bring excitement to Daytona

Yet there he was, bearing down on the finish line with a shot at winning Saturday night’s exhibition Budweiser Shootout, and with a slingshot pass on the outside of defending NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, Busch pulled off a miraculous win in the first event of 2012.Not too shabby of a start to the season.

Four area basketball teams win league tourney crowns

February 20, 2012 HEBER SPRINGS — The Southside Lady Southerners closed out the first quarter with an 11-2 run and the Heber Springs Lady Panthers never quite recovered here Saturday night in the championship game of the 4A-2 District Tournament..The Lady Southerners, co-runnersup with the Marianna Lady Trojans in the regular season, defeated the  regular-season champions, the Lady Panthers, 39-31.

Lyon turns North for new conference

February 20, 2012 The Lyon College Scots are saying goodbye to the East and hello to the North.In a news release Friday afternoon, the school announced it is leaving the TranSouth Athletic Conference and joining the American Midwest Conference.Lyon has been affiliated with the TranSouth, an National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics conference made up largely of Tennessee schools, the past 14 seasons.
