Wynne has Paragould, Forrest City and Nettleton, in that order, remaining.

Razorback Childs healthy, ready for breakout game

October 20, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE — Greg Childs has gone from one of the top receivers in the Southeastern Conference to a world-class decoy and blocker.At least, that’s the story out of Arkansas about Childs’ lack of production through the first half of the season. And the No. 10 Razorbacks (5-1, 1-1 SEC) are sticking to it as they prepare to travel to Mississippi (2-4, 0-3) on Saturday.

98-year-old never misses series in STL

LOUIS (AP) — If there’s a World Series being played in St. Louis, you can bet Clementine Wilkerson will be there.After all, she’s been to every World Series game ever played in St. Louis.Wilkerson is 98. She was just a teenager when the Cardinals went to the World Series for the first time in 1926, beating Babe Ruth and the New York Yankees.This year, they’re back for the 18th time, seeking their National League-best 11th World Series title. Wilkerson was there, bundled up in the blustery cold for the Cardinals’ 3-2 win over Texas in Game 1 on Wednesday night.

Red Wolves improve to 3-0 in conference

October 19, 2011 JONESBORO (AP) — Ryan Aplin ran for two touchdowns and passed for another to lead Arkansas State to a 34-16 victory over Florida International on Tuesday night.Aplin, who rushed for 164 yards and passed for 147, scored on runs of 22 and seven yards and hit Allen Muse on a 4-yard scoring pass as the Red Wolves (5-2, 3-0 Sun Belt) won their fourth straight game. Derek Lawson scored on a 9-yard run.

Bob Steelman-O.J. Fuller shoot 64 to lead winners of senior golf event

October 19, 2011 The teams of Bob Steelman-O.J. Fuller and Bernard Caldwell-Jerry Von Caldwell won division titles of the annual Norman Dozer Senior Golf Scramble at the Batesville Municipal Golf Course on Friday.Steelman and Fuller carded a tournament-best 67 to win the 70-and-over division. The Caldwells won with a 68 in the 55- to 69-year-old division.Donald Hedden and Neil Wilkins teamed for a 77 and second-place finish in the older division. Johnny Clark and Jim Wisener finished second among the younger golfers with a 76.

ASU senior safety suspended

October 19, 2011 JONESBORO (AP) — Arkansas State University Coach Hugh Freeze says senior safety A.J. Hills has been indefinitely suspended for a violation of team rules.Freeze said in a statement Tuesday he is aware of a “situation” involving Hills, but he didn’t specify what that meant. He said once all the facts are uncovered, officials will “move forward appropriately.”Freeze said he wouldn’t have any additional comment. A call to the school’s athletic department wasn’t immediately returned.

Lyon College teams win, lose, draw in home action Tuesday

October 19, 2011 The Lyon College women’s soccer team clobbered Freed-Hardeman 4-1 at home on Tuesday improving their record to 9-7 on the season and 3-2 in the TranSouth Athletic Conference.The Scots scored in the 3rd minute on a goal by Creeia Nuckols off an assist by Anja Klotzle.  Klotzle notched another assist when she passed to Melissa Sanchez for a score in the 44th minute.Jordan Aliviado found the net in the 63rd minute, and Melissa Sanchez scored in the 72nd minute on a pass from Kelsey McGuirk. Freed-Hardeman tacked on a last-minute score for their lone goal.

Izard County teams score big in first quarters

October 19, 2011 TIMBO — To say the Izard County basketball teams started fast here Tuesday night is an understatement.The Cougars scored 45 first quarter points en route to a 71-28, season-opening non-conference victory over the Timbo Tigers. The Lady Cougars rang up 32 points in the first stanza and won 58-30, and the Junior Cougars scored 24 in the first quarter of their 55-31 win.For the Cougars, Trenton Hatman scored 15 points and Taylor Harms grabbed six rebounds.

Hoxie v-ballers beat Cavewomen

October 19, 2011 HOXIE — The Hoxie Lady Mustangs defeated the Cave City Cavewomen in a 4-set contest Tuesday.Hoxie won 25-20, 25-16, 23-25, 25-14 dropping the Cavewomen to 4-19 for the season.Cave City Head Coach Crystal Bradley expressed pride in her 12th-graders after losing their final match of the season.“I am sad to see this group of seniors go because they have been involved in so many good things with this volleyball program and have worked so hard for me and the team,” Bradley said. “They have been great for the sophomore class to learn from and build for the future.”

Lady Pioneers win 3-0 in home v-ball finale

October 19, 2011 The Batesville Lady Pioneers wrapped up their home volleyball season Tuesday night with a 3-0, 5A-Central Conference victory over the Central Arkansas Christian Lady Mustangs.Led by Kassie Foreman, the team’s only senior, the Lady Pioneers won 25-17, 25-20, 25-22. Foreman, who was recognized during a Senior Night ceremony, hit for 15 kills and the Lady Pioneers scored 10 points on her serve.Junior Jayme Shell led the offense with 22 kills. Other statistical highs were provided by: Lainey Rumans, 25 assists; and Morgan Huff, 22 digs. Shell and Foreman each dug up 10 shots.
