Cougar golfers to provide benefit breakfast Saturday

November 10, 2011 BROCKWELL — The Izard County boys golf team will host a “Deer Hunter’s Breakfast” in the school cafeteria Saturday morning from 4:30 until 10, according to a news release from the school.The breakfast coincides with the opening of the modern gun deer season. The cost will be $5 per plate which includes pancakes, sausages, biscuits and gravy.Proceeds from the event will go to buying state championship rings for the boys golf team. The Cougars recently won their second straight Class 1A State Tournament.

Top Speedy’s drag racers announced

November 10, 2011 NEWPORT — Steve M. Simpson, Tracy Crossen and Steven Crocker were first across the finish line at Speedy’s Drag Strip here Sunday.Simpson won the Street division title. Crossen and Crocker took the Footbrake and Outlaw Street Bike class titles, respectively.Don Holcomb followed Simpson in the Street class and also placed second in among the Footbrake dragsters. Keath Sullivan placed second among the bikers. Gary Tate finished third in the Footbrake class.

Pioneers, Cougars aim to keep beat going

November 10, 2011 We’ll see who keeps the beat going.For the first time during a very up-and-down high school football season, the West Helena Cougars have won two in a row. Friday night in Pioneer Stadium, they’ll try to make it three in a row and move up in the Class 5A State Playoffs.The Pioneers, meanwhile, will be trying to run their win streak to eight games. To do so, they’ll have to silence another Cougar beat. The Cougars have won two in a row against the Pioneers, finishing off the regular seasons in 2008 and 2009 by shutting out the Pioneers.

Cave City Hall of Fame to recognize 4 on Dec. 16

November 10, 2011 CAVE CITY — The Cave City Athletic Hall of Fame committee recently announced that four new members will be inducted during a ceremony at the high school gym on Dec. 16, said committee member Jamie King.Dr. Chaney Taylor, Greg Foreman and Kristie Gay Jenkins will be inducted into the hall, and Tom Foley will be presented the Distinguished Service Award.The ceremony will happen between basketball games when Cave City hosts Stuttgart.

Southside juniors move into semis of FCB tourney

November 10, 2011 SOUTHSIDE — The host basketball teams moved into the semifinal round of the First Community Bank Junior High Tournament here Wednesday.The Southside Junior Lady Southerners began the evening with a 29-9 victory over the McCrory Junior Lady Jaguars. A little later, the Junior Southerners edged the Heber Springs Junior Panthers 19-17.In other first-round games, Riverview’s boys downed Izard County 49-45, Cedar Ridge’s boys defeated Cave City 33-25 and Newport’s boys trimmed Highland 37-32.

November 8, 2011 SOUTHSIDE — The Cave City Junior Cavewomen advanced into the semifinals of the First Community Bank Junior High Tournament here Monday while two other circulation-area teams fell out.The Junior Cavewomen edged the Newport Lady Greyypups 26-21 as Shyanne Price scored 12 points. It was the season-opener for Cave City, which is scheduled to play Heber Springs Thursday evening at 5.Heber Springs advanced with a 28-25 overtime win over Cedar Ridge. Izard County, the other circulation-area team, was knocked out by Riverview by a 51-33 count.

Lyon experiences tough road trip

In the nightcap, the 14th-ranked Cougars routed the Scot men 93-39.

’Hounds battle by Southerners, add to streak

November 7, 2011 NEWPORT ­— The Newport Greyhounds made it 25 straight playoff appearances and the Southside Southerners are still looking for their first.That was determined here Friday night when the Greyhounds defeated the Southerners 34-12 in a 4A-2 District and regular-season high school football finale.Sparked by the passing of left-handed senior quarterback Michael Reynolds and the receiving of classmate Kordre Taylor, the ’Hounds broke away from the upstart Southerners and continued their state-record run of playoff appearances.

BHS defenders rise up big again for season finale win over Beebe

November 7, 2011 BEEBE — Thanks to a defense that did its part and then some, the Batesville Pioneers ran their unbeaten string against 5A-East District high school football foes to two seasons here Friday night with a 28-14 victory over the Beebe Badgers.If you’ve forgotten, the Pioneer defense saved a struggling offense this time last year in a 17-13 win over the Badgers in Pioneer Stadium. That night, it was big stops that helped the Pioneers win the district title, complete a 7-0 district mark and a 10-0 regular season.
