In Pioneer Gymnasium, the Lady Pioneers held off a late rally for a 46-44 win over the Wynne Lady Yellowjackets, and the Pioneers successfully rallied past the Yellowjackets for a 41-38 victory.

Lyon, Freed-Hardeman coaches to don sneakers, suits for cancer

January 25, 2012 As part of an American Cancer Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches effort, Lyon College and Freed-Hardeman coaches will wear sneakers with their suits Thursday night in Becknell Gymnasium, according to a news release from Lyon.The annual Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness initiative is to demonstrate support for a world with less cancer and more birthdays, according to the American Cancer Society.

Razorback rebuilding plan may be picking up pace

January 25, 2012 FAYETTEVILLE — Mike Anderson has talked repeatedly about the slow and steady process of building up Arkansas and developing its players.Don’t look now, but Anderson just might be in the process of fast-tracking the Razorbacks back to national relevance.Arkansas (14-5, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) beat Michigan on Saturday for its second win over a ranked team, improving to 14-0 in Bud Walton Arena this season. The big victory came in front of a season-high crowd of 19,050 — one of the key points in the school’s firing of John Pelphrey in March.

Orange bounces back, moves Boeheim past Rupp in Division I victory column

January 24, 2012 CINCINNATI (AP) — Kris Joseph scored 17 points, and No. 3 Syracuse recovered from its first loss of the season by beating Cincinnati 60-53 on Monday night, giving coach Jim Boeheim a notable career win.The Orange (21-1, 8-1 Big East) used a late 12-2 run to pull away from the Bearcats (15-6, 5-3), who tried to use the energy of their first home sellout to get a signature win.Instead, Boeheim came away with career victory No. 877, moving him ahead of Adolph Rupp into sole possession of fourth place in Division I.

January 24, 2012 Wynne Lady Yellowjackets (0-4, 5A-East District; 1-14 overall) vs. Batesville Lady Pioneers (0-4, 2-13), Pioneer Gym, 6 p.m.One of the Lady Pioneers’ two victories came over this 5A-East District foe back in December — a 55-24 decision in the Searcy Bank Classic event. Since then, the Lady ’Jackets have collected their one win. It came against Class 3A Riverview. Wynne Coach Karen Sanders said Alex Meredith, a senior guard, has played well of late.  

Razorbacks will need another big man to step up against Tigers on Wednesday

January 24, 2012 FAYETTEVILLE — Two minutes into the Saturday’s game, the Arkansas Razorbacks suddenly were compelled to go forward without forward Marvell Waithe.This time they know in advance they likely won’t have their springy senior for Wednesday night’s SEC game against Auburn at Walton Arena.Rewarded for his fine play off the bench with his first start, Waithe strained a calf muscle two minutes into Arkansas’ 66-64 victory over No. 19  Michigan last Saturday at Walton.

Torpedoes place first in Searcy swim sprints

January 24, 2012 SEARCY — Led by 6-time winner Seth Bailey, the Independence County Youth Athletic Association Torpedoes won the boys title and finished third overall in the Searcy Sharks Sprint Invitational Swim Meet here Saturday.Bailey, an 11-year-old competitor, won the 50-yard freestyle race in a time of 29.05 seconds. His other victories and times in the 11- to 12-year-old division were: 50-yard backstroke, 36.31; 100 freestyle, 1:04.38; 50 breast stroke, 41.63; 50 butterfly, 36.54; and 100 individual medley, 1:19.25.

Izard County teams move up in tourney

January 24, 2012 BROCKWELL —  The Melbourne junior boys defeated Rural Special 47-36 here Monday night in the Izard County Invitational Tournament.Tied at 7 after the first quarter, the Junior Bearkatz led 23-11 and 33-23 the next two breaks. Bryce Hutchins led the winners with 16 points. Kenny Haney added 12.The Izard County junior girls overwhelmed Rural Special 49-19, leading 12-2, 25-4, and 39-14 at quarter breaks.Ashton Ford led the Lady Cougars with 12 points, and Lauren Jones added nine.

Bassmaster Classic in Shreveport sells out twice

(AP) — With a month to go, the Bassmaster Classic Outdoors Expo is a double sellout.The free expo in the Shreveport Convention Center will feature nearly 160 booths ranging from the unusual, such as Redneck Remedy and Fishouflage, to bigger ticket items by Nitro boats, Yamaha motors and Toyota trucks. There’ll be interactive booths for youngsters and booths that only hardcore outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy.

3 days of public events set for Paterno

January 24, 2012 STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — For decades they cheered him, now it’s time for Penn State students and alumni to mourn Joe Paterno.Three days of public events will begin today as Penn Staters from State College and beyond say goodbye to the man who led the Nittany Lions to 409 wins over 46 years.The 85-year-old Paterno died of lung cancer on Sunday. He learned of his diagnosis in November just days after he was fired in the aftermath of the child sex-abuse charges against former assistant Jerry Sandusky.
