Scots just miss TranSouth Conference sweep

January 20, 2012 Lyon College came close to getting their first TranSouth Athletic Conference basketball sweep of the season Thursday night in Becknell Gymnasium.After the Scot women turned back a late charge for a 67-58 victory over Trevecca Nazarene, the Trojans did the same to the Scot men while posting a 70-68 win.The Scot women improved to 4-1 in the conference and 15-4 overall. They are third in the conference standings, just a half-game behind Union and a game behind Freed-Hardeman.The Scot men are 0-5 and 6-11.

State rankings for cagers corrected

January 20, 2012 The wrong state rankings were listed for the Sacred Heart and Midland girls basketball teams in Thursday’s Guard.Sacred Heart is ranked third by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Midland is ranked fourth. The two play tonight in Pleasant Plains.

Southside juniors win 3 of 4

January 20, 2012 SOUTHSIDE — Southside’s junior high teams won three of four non-conference basketball games that were split between two sites.At home, the Southside seventh-grade girls won 20-6 as Kessie Jenkins scored nine points. The Junior Lady Southerner seventh-graders improved to 11-1.The Junior Lady Yellowjackets varsity team won 39-23. Kenzi Batterton scored 12 points for Southside, which fell to 10-5.In Mountain View, Southside’s seventh- and eighth-grade boys won 19-9 and 23-19, respectively.

Paragould sweeps BJHS

January 20, 2012 Paragould swept Batesville in 5A-East District junior high basketball games in Pioneer Gym on Thursday, winning 37-14 with the girls and 39-28 in boys action.The Junior Lady Rams led 10-4, 20-7 and 32-8 at the quarter breaks.“We just didn’t handle their defense very well,” Junior Lady Pioneer Coach Tim Palmer said. “I’m just proud they didn’t give up. We just missed way too many easy shots.”The coach said Haley Cole showed improvement in her outside shooting.The Junior Lady Pioneers fell to 3-4 in the district and 5-10 overall.

UofA women upend No. 25 Vandy

January 20, 2012 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Sarah Watkins appears to have found her scoring touch for Arkansas.Watkins scored a season-high 21 points to lead the Razorbacks to a 69-47 win over No. 25 Vanderbilt on Thursday night. The junior also tied her career high with six blocks as Arkansas (13-5, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) won its second straight after opening SEC play with four straight losses.The win is the Razorbacks’ first since 2006 over the Commodores, who had won 13 of the previous 14 meetings.

Local gymnastic center brings home 13 titles, including team crown

January 19, 2012 PINE BLUFF — Stars & Stripes Gymnastic Center athletes won 12 all-around championships and one team title at the Yankee Doodle Dandy Meet here last weekend.Led by Vanessa Thompson and Mary Claire McNabb, the local center Level 4 squad finished first. Thompson topped the 9B division competitors in a big way as she won every event. McNabb won the uneven bars and floor exercise, finished second on the balance beam and third on the vault to total enough points to win the 10B division all-around title.

Brookland volleyball star signs with Lyon College

January 19, 2012 Lyon College Coach Ray Green recently announced the signing of Mallory Grimes, an all-conference volleyball player from Brookland.The 6-foot-1 Grimes hammered 283 kills and was also a defensive force for the Lady Bearcats, tallying 98 blocks in her senior year alone and 372 for her career total.Grimes plans to major in biology at Lyon College to prepare her for a career in Occupational Therapy.Grimes said she had long considered attending Lyon, and an on-campus visit and offer in December only strengthened its standing.
