December 7, 2011 CAVE CITY — The Southside Lady Southerners and Southerners won big here Tuesday in their 4A-2 District openers.The Lady Southerners walloped the Cavewomen 61-23 as Lynsey Ellis and Maggie Carlile scored 12 points apiece. Carlile also made three steals and was one of four players to snare four rebounds. The others were Jessica Robertson, Candace Smith and Alex Burroughs. Robertson also contributed three assists.

LSU’s Chavis wins Broyles Award for top assistant

December 7, 2011 LITTLE ROCK — LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis won the annual Broyles Award given to the top college assistant coach on Tuesday.Chavis is in his third year for the top-ranked Tigers, who will play Alabama for the national championship next month.Chavis is the 16th winner of the award named in honor of former Arkansas coach Frank Broyles, whose assistant coaches went on to become notable head coaches at the college or professional level. They include Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson, Joe Gibbs and Jackie Sherrill.

Petrino brothers together again; 2 more Razorback coaches leave

December 7, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE — Paul Petrino was hired as the University of Arkansas’ offensive coordinator on Tuesday, the first addition for the Razorbacks in what has become a coaching overhaul.Petrino, the former Illinois offensive coordinator, was hired to replace Garrick McGee, who was introduced a day earlier as the new coach at Alabama-Birmingham.McGee was the first of three coordinators to leave Arkansas in recent days.

Six area high school golfers win all-state honors again

December 7, 2011 Seven high school golfers from Guard-circulation area schools earned all-state honors this fall and you’ve seen most of these faces before.Seniors Preston Harmon and Uriah Mead returned to the Class 1A team after leading the Izard County Cougars to their second straight state championship. Harmon won the individual state title by shooting an even-par 73 on The Course at Eagle Mountain. Harmon has won all-state honors in the sport three straight years.Mead earned his second all-state honor with a third-place score of 80.

Pioneer named finalist for state award

December 7, 2011 Another Batesville Pioneer is a finalist for a Farm Bureau Class 5A football player of the year honor, according to a news release from Chris Hooten of Hooten’s Arkansas Football magazine.Cody Vaughn, a senior and 3-year starter, joins Hot Springs Lakeside’s Ajalen Holley and Watson Chapel’s Jackie Harris as a finalist for the Class 5A Defensive Player of the Year Award from Farm Bureau.Last season, Batesville’s Matthew Showalter won the 5A award for defensive players.

Lyon College basketball rivals enjoy returns in Walnut Ridge

December 6, 2011 Three circulation-area teams were among the winners in Lyon College Tournament first-round games Monday night at Becknell Gymnasium, and one of them included an unbeaten squad that had to rally from a slow start.The Cedar Ridge Timberwolves fell behind 8-0 and didn’t get a lead until late in the second quarter but dominated in the second half for an 80-65 victory over the West Side Greers Ferry Eagles.Clayton Butler, a returning all-state player, led the 11-0 T-wolves with 26 points. Spencer Reaves added 25 points, Luke Henderson chipped in 15 and Cole Crabtree added 11.

Juniors win, lose to ’Pups

December 6, 2011 NEWPORT — Batesville and Newport split varsity junior high basketball games here Monday night.The Junior Lady Pioneers won 39-36 after trailing most of the game.“They could have given up, but they kept fighting,” Batesville Coach Tim Palmer said.Sarah Hayes led Batesville with seven points.“We had seven score, and when we do that we win,” Palmer said.The Junior Lady Pioneers improved to 3-4.The Greypups held off the Junior Pioneers for a 29-27 victory. The home team led 6-4, 15-13 and 24-19 at the quarter breaks.

Athletic director says ASU won’t rush to hire new coach

December 6, 2011 JONESBORO (AP) — Arkansas State University Athletic Director Dean Lee says he won’t rush the search for the coach to replace Hugh Freeze, who was hired by Mississippi on Monday after spending one season as coach of the Red Wolves.“We’re going to move quickly, but we’re not going to get in a hurry,” Lee said.Arkansas State (10-2) won the Sun Belt Conference and will play Northern Illinois in the GoDaddy.com Bowl on Jan. 8. It’s the first 10-win season for the school since 1986, when it was a member of the I-AA Southland Conference.
