December 13, 2011 SOUTHSIDE — The Southside Lady Southerners collected a key 4A-2 District basketball victory here Monday night, and they rallied from 17 down to to it.After Jordan Hicks’ 25-foot 3-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation tied the score at 42 and capped the rally, the Lady Southerners hit 11 of 12 free throws in overtime to defeat the Lonoke Lady Jackrabbits 53-46.Lonoke led 14-8, 29-16 and 34-28 at the quarter breaks. The 17-point deficit came in the first half.

’Hounds outscore Pioneers 25-3 in final 6 minutes, rally for win

December 13, 2011 It wasn’t pretty at any point, and it got downright ugly for the Batesville Pioneers during the last six minutes in Pioneer Gymnasium Monday night.The Pioneers led 32-22 with six minutes to play, and lost 47-35 to the Newport Greyhounds in a non-conference high school basketball game.During that fateful six minutes, the Pioneers committed six turnovers, hit just one of five shots and put the Greyhounds on the free-throw line eight times — five times when Batesville was leading — gave up several offensive rebounds, and saw their leader, Tanner Ring, foul out.

Accepting job offer was quick call, says new Hog defensive coordinator

December 13, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE — Paul Haynes didn’t need much time to decide about leaving Ohio State to become Arkansas’ defensive coordinator.Following a phone call from Razorbacks Coach Bobby Petrino, a simple conversation with his family was all Haynes needed to affirm his desire to coach in the Southeastern Conference and reunite with Petrino, whom he coached alongside in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars.Haynes was hired at Arkansas on Friday night and introduced Monday. He replaces former defensive coordinator Willy Robinson, who resigned last week.

Cedar Ridge, Calico Rock win Lyon titles

December 12, 2011 One high school basketball team remained unbeaten and another evened the score with two opponents as the final two rounds of the Lyon College Tournament played out in Becknell Gymnasium this past weekend.The Cedar Ridge Timberwolves improved to 14-0 with a 51-43, semifinal victory over the Harding Academy Wildcats on Friday and a convincing 58-35 win over the Cave City Cavemen in the title game on Saturday. It was the second Lyon title for the T-wolves. Their first one came in 2007.

December 12, 2011 Newport Greyhounds (4-5) vs. Batesville Pioneers (1-5), Pioneer Gymnasium, 6 p.m.The Greyhounds got off to a fast start, outscoring the Pioneers 17-7 in the first quarter, and went on to win 46-34 in a semifinal game of the Medallion Classic in Newport on Dec. 1. With Batesville’s last football game being played on Dec. 3, the Pioneers have added several players to the roster since then. They include Wesley Rudd and Jonathan “Kansas” Hendrix, regulars from last season, and Jaron Stigger, Garrett Denton and Eli Childress.

New champs decorate WR Christmas benefit races

December 9, 2011 JONESBORO (AP) — Arkansas State quarterback Ryan Aplin has been named Sun Belt Conference player of the year and ASU defensive lineman Brandon Joiner is the conference’s defensive player of the year.Former Red Wolves coach Hugh Freeze was selected coach of the year after leading ASU to a 10-2 overall record and a perfect 8-0 in conference play. Freeze resigned earlier this week to accept the head coaching job at Ole Miss.

Uekman, 3 other Hogs chosen for SEC team

December 9, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — The Southeastern Conference’s All-Freshman Team includes an Arkansas tight end who died last month.Officials announced Thursday that Garrett Uekman was named the team’s honorary captain.After a redshirt season in 2010, Uekman played in nine games this season. He died on Nov. 20, Uekman died the day following the Razorbacks’ 44-17 victory over Mississippi State at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock, Uekman’s hometown.The win clinched the team’s second straight 10-win season.
