Pioneers finish off Eagles for 48-38 home victory

December 19, 2011 This time, the Batesville Pioneers finished.Four days after a heartbreaking loss at home to the Newport Greyhounds, the Pioneers defeated the Vilonia Eagles 48-38 in Pioneer Gymnasium. The swarm of Batesville High students pouring onto the court as the final buzzer sounded was all you had to see to know something more was going on in this 10-point, non-conference victory.Against Newport, the Pioneers did about everything wrong a team could do as the Greyhounds turned a 32-22 deficit into a 47-35 victory in the last six minutes.

Lyon wins two in Springdale

December 19, 2011 SPRINGDALE — Lyon College collected two non-conference basketball victories here Saturday as the men’s team won 85-71 and the women won 80-57 over Ecclesia College.The Scot men started fast, but lost some of their intensity in the second half, their coach said.“We got off to a great start,” Kevin Jenkins said. “We shot it really well and played pretty good defense. In the second half, though, we let down a little and Ecclesia shot it better.”

Fayetteville holds off PA at top of final AP poll – BHS third in Class 5A

December 16, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE — Fayetteville’s run to the Class 7A state championship was enough to earn the top spot in the final Associated Press Arkansas high school football poll of 2011, narrowly ahead of Class 4A champion Pulaski Academy.The Bulldogs (12-2) defeated defending state champion Bentonville 29-28 in the championship game Dec. 3, avenging a 41-6 defeat to the Tigers earlier this season. The win earned Fayetteville its first state title since 2007, and is the school’s second.

Sign-up for winter swim program scheduled at Lyon pool Jan. 9-10

December 16, 2011 Registration dates for the Independence County Youth Athletic Association Torpedoes winter session swim program are set for Jan. 9 and 10 at the Lyon College pool from 5-6 p.m. each day, according to a news release.The winter session runs Jan. 9 through May 18. Swimmers are expected to participate in at least one meet per session.The program provides instruction in competitive swimming for children of ages 5-18. The cost is $100 for one child and $75 for each additional child from the same household. A late fee of $25 will charged.

Basketball in town tonight

December 16, 2011 Vilonia Lady Eagles (7-2) vs. Lady Pioneers (2-6), Pioneer Gym, 6 p.m.The Lady Eagles will be trying to bounce back from a loss at Beebe Monday night. Lydia Gordon is the one returning starter from last year’s 25-5, second-place finisher in the 5A-West District, but Collen Farris and Alaina Riley, the daughter of Vilonia Coach Alvin Riley, were regular relievers and they are currently 1-2 in scoring for the Lady Eagles. 

Malzahn: ASU feels right for start as head coach

December 15, 2011 JONESBORO — Gus Malzahn was ready to be a college head coach, and Arkansas State presented a familiar setting to reach that goal.The Arkansas native and Auburn offensive coordinator returned to his home state Wednesday to take over as the new coach of the Red Wolves. He was greeted by a standing ovation inside the school’s Convocation Center and promised to put Arkansas State in the Top 25 mix annually.

5 Lyon athletes earn top league honor

December 15, 2011 Five Lyon College athletes were named to All-TranSouth Conference first teams and soccer players led the way in the fall sports.Senior Brina Siddiq and sophomore Maria Kristjansdottir received the top honors in women’s soccer. Senior Bill Jeffries and junior Robert Hall did the same in men’s soccer.In volleyball, junior Suzanne Fincham is the first-team selection.Siddiq and Kristjansdottir, both starting defenders, recorded four blocked shots each and helped limit the opposition to 32 goals — 1.6 per game.

Lyon sets camp for basketball

December 15, 2011  The Lyon College women’s basketball team is hosting a holiday basketball clinic Dec. 28 in Becknell Gymnasium, announced Scot Coach Tracy Stewart-Lange.The camp will start at 9 a.m. and end at noon and is for girls in grades 2-8. Haynes to earn $475,000

December 15, 2011 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Arkansas defensive coordinator Paul Haynes will earn $475,000 annually, including $50,000 from the school’s Razorback Foundation.Haynes’ salary was released by the university on Wednesday in response to a Freedom of Information Act request by The Associated Press. The former Ohio State assistant coach was hired last week to replace former defensive coordinator Willy Robinson.Robinson’s salary was $375,000 at Arkansas.

December 15, 2011 The wrong team was identified in a story about the Caveman Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Wednesday’s Guard.The hall of famers will be introduced to the crowd between the Cave City-Stuttgart junior girls and senior girls games, the first and second games of a 3-game set, Friday night in the Cave City High School gymnasium.A reception for the hall of famers is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. in the gym.
