Free-throw numbers cost BHS girls again

December 21, 2011 Freebies cost the Batesville Lady Pioneers again.The Jonesboro Lady Golden Hurricane hit 21 of 29 free throws to the Lady Pioneers’ five of 12 in Pioneer Gymnasium Tuesday night as the visitors won 49-28 in a non-conference high school basketball game.

December 20, 2011 Jonesboro Lady Golden Hurricane (4-4) vs. Batesville Lady Pioneers (2-7), Pioneer Gym, 6 p.m.Shala David, a senior forward, returns from the Jonesboro team that posted a 17-11 record and qualified for the Class 6A State Tournament last season, said third-year Coach Jodi Davis. One of those losses was a 53-48 decision to the Lady Pioneers in a season-opener for the Lady ’Cane. Along with David, Morgan Malugen and Chayla Johnson have helped Jonesboro to a .500 start.

Local gymnasts win team title, three all-around championships

December 20, 2011 A Stars & Stripes Gymnastics team won a team title and three of the Batesville gymnasts won all-around championships recently in the Arkansas Pepsi Challenge meet in Hot Springs.Caroline Booker, Miracle Sentell and Mary Claire McNabb were the individual champs for the Level 4 team title holder. Booker, competing in the Children B division, won the vault, balance beam and floor exercise, and finished fifth on the uneven bars to accumulate her winning all-around score.

Season’s Beatings main event ends in draw

December 19, 2011 In the end, no one got the big present at the “Season’s Beatings” professional boxing show.Kristen Treadway, the local favorite, and Christina Fuentes of Laredo, Texas, fought to a draw Friday night in the main event of the Bad Boy Promotions show at the National Guard Armory.Treadway came into the Super Flyweight bout — billed as a Mid-South championship fight, complete with a belt for the winner — with a 4-0 record. Fuentes was 2-1 with two draws.

Lady Mustang hits for 44 points

December 19, 2011 SEARCY — Emma Sellers scored a career-high 44 points to lead the Midland Lady Mustangs past their hosts in the Riverview Classic here Friday night.The senior hit eight of nine 3-point shots and four of four free throws during the 90-54 win over the Riverview Lady Raiders. Classmate Kerstie Bumpous added 13 points, and sophomore Jessica Hertz contributed 11 points and nine rebounds.
