The junior also tied her career high with six blocks as Arkansas (13-5, 2-4 Southeastern Conference) won its second straight after opening SEC play with four straight losses.The win is the Razorbacks’ first since 2006 over the Commodores, who had won 13 of the previous 14 meetings.

Local gymnastic center brings home 13 titles, including team crown

January 19, 2012 PINE BLUFF — Stars & Stripes Gymnastic Center athletes won 12 all-around championships and one team title at the Yankee Doodle Dandy Meet here last weekend.Led by Vanessa Thompson and Mary Claire McNabb, the local center Level 4 squad finished first. Thompson topped the 9B division competitors in a big way as she won every event. McNabb won the uneven bars and floor exercise, finished second on the balance beam and third on the vault to total enough points to win the 10B division all-around title.

Brookland volleyball star signs with Lyon College

January 19, 2012 Lyon College Coach Ray Green recently announced the signing of Mallory Grimes, an all-conference volleyball player from Brookland.The 6-foot-1 Grimes hammered 283 kills and was also a defensive force for the Lady Bearcats, tallying 98 blocks in her senior year alone and 372 for her career total.Grimes plans to major in biology at Lyon College to prepare her for a career in Occupational Therapy.Grimes said she had long considered attending Lyon, and an on-campus visit and offer in December only strengthened its standing.

January 19, 2012 MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Andy Roddick’s bid to win another Grand Slam singles title nearly a decade after his first hit a roadblock this morning when a hamstring injury forced him out of the Australian Open.The former No. 1, whose lone major singles win came at the 2003 U.S. Open, was trailing Lleyton Hewitt 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 when he called the trainer to his courtside chair. He then walked over to Hewitt and shook the Australian player’s hand.Roddick had fallen to the court in the second set, but played despite being in obvious pain from the leg injury.

Unbeaten Baylor women win 18th

January 19, 2012 LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Brittney Griner scored 21 points to lead No. 1 Baylor over Texas Tech 72-64 on Wednesday.Texas Tech cut the lead to 69-63 when Monique Smalls stole the ball from Odyssey Sims in the backcourt and made a layup with 1:12 remaining.But Griner, who hit seven of 16 shots from the field and blocked eight shots, hit a short jumper from the left side to put the Lady Bears back up by eight 71-63 and seal the win.Baylor worked the ball inside to the 6-foot-8 Griner, who was able to pass the ball out or work her way in for easy layups.

Report: Trustees say Paterno fired for failing to report alleged abuse

January 19, 2012 NEW YORK (AP) — Penn State’s trustees agonized over the future of legendary football Coach Joe Paterno but ultimately decided to fire the Hall of Famer in part over what they said was his failure to go to authorities with a report of alleged sexual assault of a child by an assistant coach nearly a decade ago, according to a report published this morning in The New York Times.

January 18, 2012 SOUTHSIDE – Kevin Jackson scored 18 points here Tuesday night, including two with no time on the clock to lift the Southside Southerners to a 44-42 victory in 4A-2 District high school basketball action.The advantages were small from start to finish. The score was tied at 14 after one quarter of play and 21-all at halftime. Cave City led 37-36 after three quarters.The largest lead went to the Cavemen, but it didn’t last long. They led by six with three minutes to play. The Southerners scored the last eight points.

January 18, 2012 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — The Arkansas Razorbacks will play a game at the home of the Arkansas Travelers for the third consecutive year.Officials announced Monday that tickets for the Louisiana Tech-Arkansas baseball game can be purchased beginning at 6 p.m. today at Travs.com, and phone sales commence the following day.Last season, a large crowd was on hand when the Razorbacks beat Memphis 7-2 at Dickey-Stephens Park.Ticket prices for box seats are $18 and reserved seats are $15. General admission tickets are $12.
