January 27, 2012 The Nettleton Junior Raiders swept the Junior Pioneers in 5A-East District basketball games in Pioneer Gym Thursday night.The Junior Lady Raiders won 35-18, and the Junior Raiders won 45-33.Ali Tucker led the visiting girls team with 16 points. Sarah Hayes scored 13 in a losing cause.Nettleton’s girls led 9-7, 14-11 and 25-15 at the quarter breaks.

Scot women knock off nation’s No. 1 team

January 27, 2012 The Lyon College Scots may have made the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions’ stay atop the NAIA national poll a short one.The Scots defeated the Lady Lions 48-43 in Becknell Gymnasium Thursday night, a little less than two weeks after the team from Henderson, Tenn., moved into the top spot and less than one week after they became a unanimous No. 1.The Scots had moved into the 25th spot on Jan. 9. They fell out after losing to the Union Lady Bulldogs in Jackson, Tenn., on Jan. 12.

Treadway to fight Saturday at casino in Tunica, Miss.

January 27, 2012 Local boxer Kristen Treadway will take part in “Fights at the Fitz,” a 5-fight card in the Grand Ballroom at Fitzgerald’s Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Miss., Saturday night, according to a news release from Prize Fight and Global Boxing.Treadway, who is unbeaten with four victories and a draw, is scheduled to taken on Savannah Hill in a 6-round bantamweight class match. Hill, the daughter of a prize fighter, is married to and trained by professional boxer Brad Hill.

Cave City Bass Club to meet

January 27, 2012 The Cave City Bass Club will meet at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 in the Citizens Bank Annex on College Street in Batesville to complete its 2012 tournament schedule, said Ron Watkins, who served as tournament director in 2011.Club members will also elect a club secretary and discuss forming a voluntary tournament committee.

Four teams punch tickets into Izard County finals

January 26, 2012 BROCKWELL — Four teams qualified for the Izard County Invitational Tournament championship round here Wednesday.In the first of four semifinals, the Melbourne Junior Lady Bearkatz held off a third-quarter surge by the tournament hosts, the Izard County Junior Lady Cougars, to seal a 39-36 victory.The Junior Lady Bearkatz were led by Shelby Byram’s 13 points. Kelly Cooper added 11 points for the 17-2 Junior Lady Bearkatz.The Junior Cougars defeated the Junior Bearkatz 45-22 after jumping to a 25-6 first-quarter lead.

January 26, 2012 MOUNTAIN HOME — The Mountain Home Junior Lady Bombers defeated the Batesville Junior High Lady Pioneers 35-23 in the Mountain Home tournament Wednesday evening.“Overall, this was the best game we have played all year. The girls played phenomenal defense,” Junior Lady Pioneer Assistant Coach Sean Coker said. “Really, the only difference between them and us was that their shots were falling and ours were not.”Eighth-grader Madison Stave led the 6-11 Junior Lady Pioneers with 10 points.
