January 30, 2012 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Lee Mayberry was 10 years old the first time Nolan Richardson watched him dribble a basketball.It was 1981, and both were in Tulsa — Richardson as the University of Tulsa’s new coach and Mayberry as a kid whose older sister was dating Richardson’s son.At that time, Richardson couldn’t know Mayberry would become an All-America point guard for him at Arkansas and a first-round NBA Draft pick.“He’s still the same Lee Mayberry I first saw all those years ago,” Richardson said. “All the success he had, it never went to his head or changed him.

Gulley to join Arkansas Razorbacks

January 27, 2012 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — University of Arkansas Coach Mike Anderson says former Oklahoma State guard Fred Gulley is expected to join the Razorbacks.Gulley, was granted his transfer from the Cowboys last month, said Monday he had enrolled at Arkansas and planned to play there. The Fayetteville native was on the Razorbacks’ bench in street clothes during Wednesday win over Auburn.Anderson says Gulley hasn’t practiced with the team and that he’s currently paying his own way in school.

Title matchups set for Izard County Invitational

January 27, 2012 BROCKWELL — Four more teams advanced to the finals of the Izard County Invitational here Thursday.The Cave City junior girls began the evening defeating Salem 41-21. They led each quarter break 11-7, 22-9 and 29-16. Abbi Ball led Cave City with 13 points.The Cave City junior boys won 24-16 defeating Calico Rock. The Junior Cavemen lead 7-4, 9-7 and 15-12 at the quarter breaks. Tristen McSpadden led the Junior Cavemen with 15 points.

Nettleton juniors sweep

January 27, 2012 The Nettleton Junior Raiders swept the Junior Pioneers in 5A-East District basketball games in Pioneer Gym Thursday night.The Junior Lady Raiders won 35-18, and the Junior Raiders won 45-33.Ali Tucker led the visiting girls team with 16 points. Sarah Hayes scored 13 in a losing cause.Nettleton’s girls led 9-7, 14-11 and 25-15 at the quarter breaks.

Scot women knock off nation’s No. 1 team

January 27, 2012 The Lyon College Scots may have made the Freed-Hardeman Lady Lions’ stay atop the NAIA national poll a short one.The Scots defeated the Lady Lions 48-43 in Becknell Gymnasium Thursday night, a little less than two weeks after the team from Henderson, Tenn., moved into the top spot and less than one week after they became a unanimous No. 1.The Scots had moved into the 25th spot on Jan. 9. They fell out after losing to the Union Lady Bulldogs in Jackson, Tenn., on Jan. 12.

Treadway to fight Saturday at casino in Tunica, Miss.

January 27, 2012 Local boxer Kristen Treadway will take part in “Fights at the Fitz,” a 5-fight card in the Grand Ballroom at Fitzgerald’s Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Miss., Saturday night, according to a news release from Prize Fight and Global Boxing.Treadway, who is unbeaten with four victories and a draw, is scheduled to taken on Savannah Hill in a 6-round bantamweight class match. Hill, the daughter of a prize fighter, is married to and trained by professional boxer Brad Hill.
