Treadway wins in Tunica; Ward to fight for WBA title

February 1, 2012 TUNICA, Miss. — In only her sixth professional boxing match, Batesville’s Kristen “TNT” Treadway defeated veteran Savanna Hill in “Fights at the Fitz” here Saturday night, according to a news release from Brandon Foster.Treadway’s record is 5-0 with one draw after being awarded a unanimous decision over Hill in a 6-rounder. Hill has fought 19 professional matches.The match was one of five in the Grand Ballroom at Fitzgerald’s Hotel & Casino. Kamil Laszcyk won the featured match, defeating Samuel Sanchez in another 6-round unanimous decision.

Pirate Jacob Roark scores back-to-back 40s

February 1, 2012 VIOLA — Jacob Roark scored his second straight 40-point effort as the Concord Pirates defeated the Viola Longhorns 89-81 in a non-conference meeting.Roark hit for 40 points, five days after scoring 41 in a victory over the West Side Greers Ferry Eagles.Ryan Cornelison added 21 points and Ethan Hebert provided 11 for the winners.Austin Gardner led Viola with 26 points.The Lady Longhorns defeated the Lady Pirates 63-49. Molly Jefferson scored 15 points in the loss.A score and details for the junior boys game were not available at press time. 

Fast-running Mustangs bolt by Pioneer cagers

February 1, 2012 The tempo was up and Batesville Pioneer basketball teams went down in Pioneer Gymnasium on Tuesday night.The Forrest City Lady Mustangs outscored the Lady Pioneers 17-2 during the first four minutes of the third quarter, overcoming a halftime deficit and paving the way to a 69-58 victory in 5A-East District play.In the nightcap, the Mustangs used a flurry of turnovers and some sharp shooting to score the first 12 points, then withstood a couple of Pioneer charges to post a 61-43 victory.

Caveman football player signs with Arkansas Tech

February 1, 2012 CAVE CITY — Kody White, a 3-year starter at tight end for the Cave City Cavemen, signed a national letter of intent to attend Arkansas Tech and play football for the Wonder Boys this morning during a ceremony in the high school gymnasium, announced Cave City Coach Jon Bradley.White, a 6-foot-6, 260-pounder, started three seasons for the Cavemen and was honorably mentioned to the 4A-2 All-District teams the past two seasons. White holds the school records for pass receptions (49) and receiving yards (928).

Razorback pitcher placed on stopper list

February 1, 2012 FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Arkansas pitcher Nolan Sanburn has been named to the watch list for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award.Officials said Tuesday the sophomore is one of 45 pitchers on the watch list for the award, which honors the nation’s top relief pitcher.Sanburn led the Razorbacks with eight saves last season, which ranked sixth in the Southeastern Conference. He finished his rookie season with a 2-4 record and a 3.62 ERA.

Lyon breaks through in Mississippi

January 31, 2012 BLUE MOUNTAIN, Miss. — It stopped at nine in Mississippi.The Lyon College men’s basketball team defeated the Blue Mountain Toppers 62-58 here Monday night, ending their loss string at nine games and collecting their first TranSouth Athletic Conference victory of the season.

January 31, 2012 Forrest City Lady Mustangs (2-4, 5A-East District; 5-14, overall) vs. Batesville Lady Pioneers (1-5, 3-14), Pioneer Gym, 6 p.m.The Lady Mustangs will try to finish off the first turn through the district schedule with two straight wins. They trimmed the Blytheville Lady Chickasaws on Friday night. “We have been playing better,” Forrest City Coach Bobby Harris said. “Keyma Thompson, Mary Burks and Nikima Chatters have been playing pretty well.” 

Batesville juniors finish home slate with three wins

January 31, 2012 In their last appearance at home, Batesville’s junior high basketball teams recorded a sweep in 5A-East District play.In the varsity opener, the Junior Lady Pioneers clobbered the Wynne Lady Bees 42-12. The Junior Pioneers followed with a 39-29, come-from-behind decision over the Bees.Batesville’s girls shut out the visitors in the first quarter. Batesville led 11-0, 19-5 and 27-8 at the quarter breaks.Sarah Hayes led the winners with 12 points. Kassie Blake and Katie Baxter chipped in 11 and eight points, respectively.
