• Lady Dragons stay unbeaten in district play

    SOUTHSIDE — The DeWitt Lady Dragons improved to 5-0 in the 4A-2 with a 15-3 decision over the Southside Lady Southerners here Thursday.
    Southside fell to 3-2 in the conference and 11-9 overall. DeWitt and Heber Springs are unbeaten in the conference. They are set to play each other Monday. Southside visits Clinton today. A win would secure third.
    DeWitt slapped 17 hits Thursday while Southside managed five.
    “They are by far the best hitting team we’ve seen all year,” Southside Coach Fred Denison Jr. said.

  • Southerners doomed by 10 errors

    SOUTHSIDE —The DeWitt Dragons defeated the Southside Southerners 13-12 in an extra-inning, Class 4A-2 District baseball game here Thursday.
    Actually, it might be better to say Southside beat itself considering the 10 errors it committed. When Southside wasn’t helping DeWitt’s cause, the Dragons were pounding the baseball
    Dewitt was only credited with six hits, but three of those were home runs and another was a double.

  • Coach, 2 players add to All-Star games

    Melbourne Coach Mike Watson has been selected as head coach of the East boys basketball team for the Arkansas High School Coaches Association All-Star Classic, according to a news release from the Arkansas Activities Association.
    Watson, who led the Melbourne Bearkatz to the Class 2A state championship game, will be joined by 6-foot-3 standout Chase Massey as well as Derek Baird, who is the manager.

  • Rain helps to shrink sports report

    Rain and scheduling difficulties shortened the sports report in today’s Guard.
    Rain and wet conditions knocked out the high school track and field meet at Beebe, where Batesville girls and boys teams were scheduled to participate.
    Batesville Coach Stuart Smith said the Lady Pioneers and some junior Lady Pioneers will run in a meet at Paragould on Tuesday. That event was not on their original schedule.

    Suzanne Fincham, a 6-foot, 2-sport athlete from Lake Hamilton High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball and volleyball for Lyon College, according to a news release from the college.

  • Lyon, Central Baptist split softball twinbill

    The Lyon College Pipers collected a 5-2 victory and lost 10-8 in extra innings to the Central Baptist Lady Mustangs Thursday in a nonconference doubleheader at the Batesville Recreation Complex.
    Lyon (15-16) snapped a 4-game losing streak with the game-one victory and collected 21 total hits in the CBC doubleheader. Central Baptist (26-6) has split the season series with Lyon, 2-2.

  • Young Wynne battery zaps BHS

    The Wynne Lady Yellow-jacket battery took charge in just about every way on a rainy Thursday evening at the Batesville Recreation Complex.
    Freshman pitcher Claire Clark gave up just six hits, struck out 27, walked four and hit one batter as the Lady Yellowjackets swept the Batesville Lady Pioneers 4-2 and 8-4 in a 5A-East District high school softball doubleheader.
    Clark also hit five for eight, including two home runs, and drove in six runs.

  • Junior Lady Southerners win two events at Newport meet

    Courtney Farrier and Lacey Foster won events and helped the Southside Junior Lady Southerners finish second in a track and field meet in Newport on Monday.
    Farrier’s winning pole vault was 8 feet, 3 inches. Foster’s winning time in the 100-meter hurdles was 17.89 seconds.
    These and other Southside results were inadvertently omitted from Tuesday’s paper.

  • Softball tourney will benefit Cave City graduating class

    CAVE CITY — The Cave City Class of 2009 Spring Fling Men’s Softball Tournament is set for April 18, according to a news release.
    Proceeds will help fund a drug and alcohol free graduation party for Cave City High School.
    The slow-pitch, double-elimination event is limited to the first 12 teams to enter. The entry fee is $100 per team.
    T-shirts and sponsor plaques will go to the champions. The second-place team will get sponsor plaques.
    The rain date is April 25.

    BEEBE — Batesville Junior High track and field teams took seconds in a meet here Tuesday.
    The Beebe Junior Lady Badgers won with 97 points. The Junior Lady Pioneers totaled 83. The Heber Springs Junior Panthers outscored the Junior Pioneers 107.5-83. Twenty-four teams competed.
    Junior Lady Pioneer Natalie Meinzer won the 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter races.
    Junior Lady Pioneer Coach Craig Stave announced that the date for the Pepsi Junior Pioneer Relays has been moved to April 24.
