• Cougars pounce at right time for 13-11 win

    VIOLA — The Izard County Cougars used some timely hitting and took advantage of an error in the top of the seventh inning to break an 11-11 tie and walk away with a 13-11 nonconference win over the Viola Longhorns here Monday.
    Jake Dockins led off the decisive seventh with a walk and moved to second on a fielder’s choice. He later scored when Preston Harmon ripped a 2-out single to the right side. Ethan Porter followed with an RBI single up the middle to set the final score.

  • Lady Mustangs keep winning stampede rolling

    PLEASANT PLAINS — The Midland Lady Mustangs were 3-0 in the Midland Spring Bash over the weekend and then run-ruled conference foe Walnut Ridge 11-1 Monday to improve to 16-7.
    In the Spring Bash, Midland began with a 6-5 win over White County Central, followed with 7-1 and 9-4 decisions over West Side Greers Ferry.
    West Side’s road to the title game included wins over Mount Vernon-Enola (7-1) and WCC (8-3). WCC defeated MV-E 9-4 in the losers bracket final.

  • Koren Schram selected for second team of Lowe’s All-Americans

    ST. LOUIS — Southside alum and Dartmouth senior guard Koren Schram has been named to the Lowe’s Senior CLASS All-Senior All-America second team as one of 10 finalists for the national award, according to a news release from the Hanover, N.H. college.
    The award, which was presented to Oklahoma senior Courtney Paris and both All-Senior All-America teams were announced this past Saturday at the NCAA Women’s Final Four in St. Louis. Schram is one of just two honorees from a non-BCS affiliated school.

  • Scots just miss bagging sweep in Tennessee

    PULASKI, Tenn. — The Lyon College Scots came up just short of taking a TranSouth Athletic Conference sweep with the Martin Methodist RedHawks here Saturday.
    Lyon won the first game of the 3-game series Friday, 10-6 in 10 innings. On Saturday, Lyon won the opener 10-5 and then lost 5-4.
    It is the third time in as many tries that the Scots have taken two of three on the road against conference foes. They’re 0-3 at home.

    The Bulldogs defeated the Cabot Panthers 9-2 Saturday night at the Batesville Recreation Complex in the First Community Bank Pioneer Classic large-school championship game.
    And, yes, a title in the high school baseball event was a long time coming for the Bulldogs.

    LYNN — The Hillcrest Lady Screamin’ Eagles won their first-ever Lawrence County Tournament here Saturday by defeating the defending champions, the Walnut Ridge Lady Bobcats, 8-3.
    Samantha Blevins pitched the win, striking out 10 while scattering three hits and six walks.
    Offensively, Lauren Pickle hit three for three, Miranda Doyle hit two for two, and Natalie Johnson drove in two runs. Johnson and Blevins each hit doubles.

  • Wilkey wins NeSmith opener at Batesville Motor Speedway

    LOCUST GROVE — Jason Wilkey won the season-opening NeSmith Late Model feature at the Batesville Motor Speedway Friday night, according to the results posted on the track’s Web site.
    Five cars participated in the feature event, which has brought late models back to local track on a weekly basis for the first time in about a decade. Travis Ashley, Justin Asplin, Greg Pectol and Jeff Moss rounded out the top five.
    The modified feature trophy went to Shawn Walsh, who held off Jared Landers, Brandon Smith and 13 others.

  • Screamin’ Eagles break Bobcat hold on county crown

    STRAWBERRY —The Hillcrest Screamin’ Eagles broke a real stranglehold here Saturday when they defeated the Walnut Ridge Bobcats 11-7 in the Lawrence County Tournament championship game.
    River Valley, which has since consolidated with Lynn to form Hillcrest, won the county title in 1995. Walnut Ridge won it the next 13 years.

    Ron Mangold rallied for a 4-stroke win in the Arkansas State Golf Association Stroke Play Championship at The Course at Eagle Mountain over the weekend.
    The Pocahontas man trailed by three strokes after 18 holes Saturday and was down one stroke at the turn Sunday before rallying to claim the championship with a 9-over par, 2-day total of 153 (76-77).
