Lady Southerners romp on Riverview Lady Raiders
SOUTHSIDE — The Lady Southerners thrashed the Riverview Lady Raiders 11-1 here Tuesday in non-conference high school softball action.
Pitcher Haley Mourer scattered four hits, struck out eight and walked two in a run-ruled five innings. She also led the offense, providing two hits, including a double, and driving in three runs.
Brandi Payne and Lunden Roberts contributed three hits each, Sami Hallowell drove in two and Miranda Tucker tripled and scored three runs. Payne and Roberts also tripled. -
Midland Mustangs play one to forget
PLEASANT PLAINS — Midland Coach Donnie Branscum has been coaching high school baseball a long time, but he saw something Tuesday he hopes he doesn’t see again.
“We played as bad as I have ever had a team play through four innings. We made three errors in the first inning alone,” Branscum said. “We pick off two runners and fail to get them at second. We walked six runners in the first four innings as well.” -

Pipers take two from Cougars
Taylor Morgan and Abbey Canon drove in two runs apiece in game one and Tenequa Martin pitched a 1-hit shutout in game two during the Lyon College Pipers’ 4-3 and 3-0 twinbill sweep of the Mid-Continent Cougars Tuesday afternoon at the Batesville Recreation Complex.
Lyon improves to 17-16 overall and is currently three and a half games behind TranSouth Athletic Conference leader Martin Methodist in the league standings at 5-4. -
CAC blanks Batesville in soccer matches
The Central Arkansas Christian soccer teams remained unbeaten in the 5A-East Conference with shutout victories at Pioneer Stadium on Tuesday.
The Mustangs won 6-0. The Lady Mustangs won 8-0.
The Mustangs outshot the Pioneers 17-4.
“There are reasons their winning the conference and they’ve got a chance of going unbeaten in the conference,” Batesville Coach TJ Stroud said. “What they really do well is taking advantage of your mistakes. -
Lady Pioneers keep foes winless
The Batesville Lady Pioneers made quick work of the winless West Helena Lady Cougars in a 5A-East District softball doubleheader Tuesday at the Batesville Recreation Complex.
The Lady Pioneers won 28-0 and 15-0 in run-ruled 3-inning contests.
In the opener, pitchers Angela Woods and Brooke Crowell combined for a no-hitter. Woods struck out four and walked none in two innings of work. Crowell struck out one while walking none in an inning. -
Wet conditions, rain-outs alter schedules
Wet conditions after Sunday’s heavy rains resulted in several postponements on Monday, and rescheduling of those dates and earlier rain-outs resulted in numerous changes in area sports schedule.
The only sporting events for area schools that happened Monday were Cave City-at-Mountain View softball and Southside-at-Crowley’s Ridge Academy (Paragould) soccer.

Batesville Bullet wins SUPR race
LOCUST GROVE — Wendell Wallace rocketed around the 3/8-mile, high banked oval of Batesville Motor Speedway Friday night to win the Southern United Professional Racing Late Model feature.
Wallace, also known as “The Batesville Bullet,” lived up to his nickname in the 40-lap main event, leading the last 33 laps. Traffic became an issue late and helped Greenbrier’s Bill Frye, the polesitter, get the nose of his car close to Wallace’s back bumper by the time the checkers flew. -
Falcons stop Southerners in second half
PARAGOULD — The Crowley’s Ridge Academy Falcons blanked the Southside Southerners in the second half here Monday while posting a 2-1 high school soccer victory.
Southside led 1-0 at halftime. Josh Harris scored with an assist from Tyler Sarracino.
“Both teams played well,” Southside Coach Jason Weaver said. “All three goals happened in crazy ways. They just got one more good bounce than we did.”
Southerner goalie Kody White left the game midway through the first half after a head-to-head collision. -
Cavewomen clinch championship
MOUNTAIN VIEW — The Cave City Cavewomen clinched a share of the Class 3A 1-East District championship with a 13-7 win over the Mountain View Lady Yellowjackets here Monday.
Cave City will share the regular season title with Wednesday’s winner between Yellville-Summit and Flippin. The Cavewomen hold a tiebreaker over Flippin, but Yellville-Summit holds a tiebreaker over Cave City. That will come into play when the district tournament seeds are determined. -
Mustangs clinch 2nd place in 2A-2 District
PLEASANT PLAINS — The Midland Mustangs secured second place in the Class 2A-2 District with a 10-5 win over Cotter here Friday.
The win also guarantees the Mustangs a region tournament berth.
Ben Lytle pitched all seven innings and recorded a career-best 15 strikeouts. He allowed six hits and hit three batters.
Midland trailed 4-1 early, but rallied with three runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
