• Southerner senior forward named Class 4A All-State

    Senior forward Tyler Sarracino is Southside High School’s lone representative on the Class 4A All-State soccer roster.
    Sarracino scored 15 goals and nine assists, both team highs, to lead the Southerners to an 8-8 record. They qualified for the postseason and lost in the first round to the Little Rock Lutheran Lions.
    “Tyler is probably in the top five in goals and assists in our program,” Southside Coach Jason Weaver said. “He was a real leader for us this year, on and off the field.”

  • 3 BHS soccer players named all-state

    Three Batesville High soccer players were named to the Class 5A All-State team and one of those is making a return appearance.
    Lady Pioneers sophomore midfielder Erin Richards is joined by classmate and fellow midfielder Kandess Pfitzner, and sophomore Pioneer goalie Vivien Ramirez, according to a news release from the Arkansas Activities Association.
    Richards and Pfitzner helped the Lady Pioneers to a 9-5-1 record. Their season ended with a loss in the quarterfinals to the Little Rock Christian Lady Warriors, the eventual state champions.

  • ’Dogs nip Hogs in 10th inning

    HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th inning, Matt Cerione scored on Joey Lewis’ sharp grounder to the left side and Georgia won 2-1 over Arkansas in the second round of the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament Thursday night.
    Arkansas third baseman Zack Cox made a diving stop, but threw wide of home plate, causing catcher Ryan Cisterna to pull off home plate.
    Georgia broke a scoreless tie in the sixth with back-to-back doubles from Rich Poythress and Bryce Massanari, giving the Bulldogs (37-20) a 1-0 lead.

  • Southside High to host three basketball camps

    SOUTHSIDE — Southside High School will host summertime basketball camps June 9-12, June 15-18 and July 6-9, according to a news release from the school.
    The first camp is for girls and boys entering grades kindergarten through 3. The second camp is for girls entering grades 4-8. The final camp is for boys entering grades 4-7.
    The hours for the June 9-12 and July 6-9 camps are 8:30-11 a.m. For the June 15-18 camp they 8:30-noon, except for the final day when they are 8:30-10:30 a.m.

  • UA tennis players win tourney openers

    COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) — University of Arkansas tennis players Aurelija Miseviciute and Blake Strode each won first-round matches at NCAA tournaments Wednesday.
    Miseviciute, the No. 3 seed on the women’s side, beat Jenifer Widjaja of Pacific 6-1, 6-2. Strode, seeded 15th in the men’s tournament, beat Harvard’s Chris Clayton 6-2, 6-2.
    Strode is scheduled to face Fresno State’s Rudolf Siwy in the second round today. Miseviciute is set opposite California’s Marina Cossou.

  • Razorbacks initiate sweep of top seeds

    HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Stephen Richards got Josh Adams to hit into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded and seventh-seeded Arkansas beat No. 2 seed Florida 8-5 in the Southeastern Conference baseball tournament opener.
    It was the first of four first-round games in which the lower seeds won.
    Richards and Mike Bolsinger combined on 5-plus scoreless innings of relief for the seventh-seeded Razorbacks (33-20) on Wednesday at Regions Park.

  • CBC recognizes former Pioneer

    CONWAY — Michael Holder, a 2006 Batesville High graduate and former Pioneer basketball player, was recently recognized at the Central Baptist College Student Awards Banquet, according to a news release from the school
    Holder, a junior, won the “Best Rebounder” award and was recognized for a team-high 77 blocked shots for the 2008-09 season.

    The first of two sessions of the Batesville Pioneer Trailblazer Football Camp is scheduled to begin June 1, announced Batesville Coach Dave King.
    The first session runs for four days and is for boys entering grades 4 through 6. The second session runs five days and is for boys entering grades 7-9.
    Each day of both sessions of the non-contact camp start at 8 a.m. and end at noon.

  • Timberwolf signs with CBC Mustangs

    NEWARK — Cedar Ridge Timberwolves basketball standout Cody Murphree recently signed a letter of intent to play for the Central Baptist College Mustangs.
    The 6-foot-5 guard will be reunited with former Cedar Ridge teammate Brady Batson when he gets to the school in Conway. Murphree said that played a part in his decision.

  • Lady Pioneers collect two seconds at track, field Meet of Champions

    PEARCY — The Batesville Lady Pioneers didn’t win at the Meet of Champions here Wednesday, but they did put together an outstanding day.
    Senior Lizzie Walton just missed in the 400-meter dash, recording a personal-best time of 58.89 seconds while finishing less than a second behind Pine Bluff’s Anshanetta Turner.
    Walton, the top scorer for Batesville’s 5-time defending Class 5A state champions over the past two seasons, also finished third in both the triple jump and pole vault.
