  • Sheridan star signs with Lyon

    Chris Clinton, a 6-foot-6 forward from Sheridan, recently signed to play men’s basketball for Lyon College.
    Clinton averaged 15 points, 10.5 rebounds and two assists per game as a senior with Sheridan High School. He was a 2-time 6A-South All-District player and was a member of the 2009 6A All-State Tournament team.

  • Pioneer Camp of Champs scheduled for June 15-17

    The Batesville Pioneer Baseball Camp of Champs is scheduled for June 15-17 at the Batesville Recreation Complex, Batesville Coach Mark Rush said.
    The camp is for 6- to 16-year-olds and will run from 8:30 a.m. until noon each day.
    Campers will be instructed and drilled in the fundamentals of hitting, fielding, pitching, base running and playing particular positions. They will also be timed in the 60-yard dash and participate in skills contests.

  • Highwaymen still searching for Zone 2 win

    MOUNTAIN HOME — The Batesville Atlas Asphalt Highwaymen came home still looking for a Zone 2 victory in American Legion baseball.
    Ethan Martin’s 2-out single in the eighth inning delivered a 3-2 victory to Mountain Home Lockeroom here Thursday night. The Lockeroom improved to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the zone.
    The Highwaymen fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the zone. The Highwaymen leveled their overall mark before heading home. They defeated the Lockeroom 16-9 in a 5-inning nightcap.

  • Legion doubleheaders rained out

    Rain washed out both American Legion baseball doubleheaders involving Batesville teams on Wednesday and only one has been rescheduled.
    The Citizens Bank-at-Jonesboro Sports Academy Seams doubleheader has been rescheduled for June 22, Coach Robbie Holmes said. The Bankers are scheduled to take on Malden, Mo., Friday evening at 5 in a tournament in Paragould.

  • Spots still open for hoops camp at Southside High

    SOUTHSIDE — Southside High School Coach Brad McGhee said space is still open for the Southerners’ first basketball camp.
    The 4-day camp for girls and boys entering kindergarten through the third grade is set to begin Tuesday morning at 8:30. Campers can register at the gymnasium beginning at 8 Tuesday.

  • Rain washes out practice session slated for Sturch Memorial race

    LOCUST GROVE — Preparation for the 4th Annual Matt Sturch Memorial Street Stock Race was set to begin tonight with an open practice session at the Batesville Motor Speedway, but after Wednesday’s heavy rain the racers will have to jump right into racing Friday night.
    The race was previously held at 64 Speedway in Augusta, but Don Sturch, the father of the late Matt Sturch, approached BMS owner and promoter Mooney Starr earlier this year and asked him to take the reins of the race.

  • Batesville’s 3-time honorees top all-state track, field lists

    Six Guard-circulation area track and field athletes earned another all-state certificate from the Arkansas Activities Association and four will soon collect their third in a row.
    All-state recognition in track and field is earned by winning or finishing second in a state meet, and Batesville High School seniors Lizzie Walton, Chelsea Tate, Kelsie Wilson and Madison Neely are 3-time honorees.
    That quartet of veterans helped the Lady Pioneers win their fifth straight state championship in a row in the Class 5A meet just two and a half weeks ago.

  • Batesville Bassmasters to discuss rescheduling

    The Batesville Bassmasters will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the George Rider Room of First Community Bank to discuss rescheduling a tournament, secretary Colin Patterson said.
    A tournament originally slated for May 23 was postponed because of the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
    “We’ll discuss setting a tournament time, place and date,” Patterson said. “We’ll also discuss the club taking back over the White River Bass Classic.”
    That annual tournament, set for Aug. 8, coincides with the White River Water Carnival.
