JONESBORO (AP) — Arkansas State will play Virginia Tech in football in 2011.
The Hokies will host the Red Wolves on Sept. 17, Arkansas State announced Wednesday.
ASU Athletic Director Dean Lee said the school signed a $1 million contract to play Virginia Tech.
The teams last played in 2002, when the Hokies beat Arkansas State 63-7 in Steve Roberts’ first game as ASU’s coach.
CONWAY (AP) — Defensive end Larry Hart is one of nine Central Arkansas players on the preseason All-Southland Conference first team, which was announced Wednesday.
Hart, the league’s defensive player of the year in 2008, was joined on the first team by teammates: Nick Cowger, junior fullback; Lane Freiwald, senior offensive lineman; Will Merritt, senior offensive linemen; Taylor Scott, senior defensive lineman; James Lancaster, senior linebacker; Derrick Boyd, senior defensive back; Pieri Feazell, senior defensive back; and Anthony Gambles, senior defensive back.
Despite the threat of rain, the 19th Annual Putt-N-Putt Tournament was played Wednesday night and there were a couple of firsts.
On the male side of the competition, a father-son trio made history. Kirk Shaw won the mens division and his son Kyler Shaw won the boys division. Clay Shaw and son Kevin Shaw each took second in their respective divisions and Kim Looney and Jack Looney each finished third.
Kirk Shaw shot a 6-over par 114. Kevin Shaw was a stroke behind and Kim Looney carded a 118.
Chris McNaughton is climbing the career ladder. The former Lyon College Pipers soccer coach accepted an assistant coaching job with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans, the school announced Wednesday.
McNaughton was the head coach for the Pipers for the last three seasons and helped turn the program around. He posted a 34-19-3 record with the Pipers. The program was 8-39-0 prior to his reign.
The Batesville Pioneer football prospects will get together at 6:59 a.m. Saturday morning in Pioneer Stadium for their annual first day of tests.
Thirty-four days later, Thursday night, Sept. 3, they will meet the Newport Greyhounds in the same stadium for a season-opening football game.
That meeting is part of a historic happening. It is the second of 11 Arkansas high school games set for live telecast on KARZ, Channel MY 42, a sister station of KARK (Channel 4) in Little Rock. The first will happen Sept. 1, the Jacksonville-at-Cabot game.
A registration for the Independence County Youth Athletic Association’s fall soccer leagues is set for Saturday, 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., at First Community Bank, announced Angela Clark.
The leagues are for children ages 3 to 18. The costs are $50 for one child, $90 for two and $125 for three or more.

Megan Renn, an outfielder-second baseman from Roseville, Calif., has transferred to Lyon College to play softball for the Pipers, according to a news release from Lyon’s sports information department.
Renn was a first-team NFCA Junior College All-American and first-team all-conference performer in her sophomore season at Sierra Community College, batting .416 with 27 stolen bases.
Renn also earned all-conference honors during her freshman season at Sierra, finishing sixth in her league with a .413 batting average.
Renn will enter Lyon as a junior this fall.
NEWPORT — Cave City’s Don Stitcher found his way back to the top of the podium after winning the foot brake division at Speedy’s Newport Dragway on Sunday.
Stitcher got down the strip quicker than Chris Files. Bill Smith was third.
In the street division, Gary Spicer took the top spot with Mark Simpson and Marty McBride in tow.

On Saturday, Stitcher finished sixth at Dyersburg, Tenn.
The Batesville Women’s Bowling Association will host its fall meeting Monday at Hollywood Bowl, announced Yvonne Satterwhite.
All members, non-members and anyone interested in bowling and having fun are invited to attend, Satterwhite said. The meeting is to begin at 6 p.m.
MELBOURNE — Space is still available for anyone in grades kindergarten through seventh wanting to attend a basketball camp here next week, said Melbourne Coach Mike Watson.
The Bearkatz Basketball: Elementary All-Star Camp is set for Aug. 4-6. Kindergarten through third-grade campers will register beginning at 7:30 on Aug. 4. Fourth- through seventh-graders will register beginning at 9 the same morning.
CHEROKEE VILLAGE — The team of Junior Byford-Joann Burgess-Josh Everheart-Helen Chaffin shot a 14-under-par 58 to win the Tommy Bolt Memorial Golf Tournament here Saturday at the South Course.
The teams of Randy Curler-Patricia Kimball-Glen Mitchell-Ed Hardison and Matt Modelevsky-Matt Haustein-Bart Barton-Elbert Frazier tied for second with 61s.
