Natural arrested on Dickson Street
FAYETTEVILLE (AP) — Pitcher Dan Cortes of the Northwest Arkansas Naturals has been arrested.
Police took Cortes to the Washington County Jail early Wednesday morning after he was allegedly caught urinating on a fence near a bar on Dickson Street in Fayetteville. The 22-year-old Cortes is charged with public intoxication and disorderly conduct. He’s free on $655 bond. -
United Way benefit golf tourney set for municipal course July 25
The Batesville Municipal Golf Course will be the location of the United Way “Day of Caring” and “Angel Tree Project” benefit golf tournament, according to a news release.
The 4-person scramble is set for July 25 and will feature longest drive, closest to the pin, and $10,000 hole-in-one contests.
The start time is 8 a.m. Lunch will be provided. The cost is $180 per team and carts are available on request. -
LR Marathon set for March 7
LITTLE ROCK (AP) — The 2010 Little Rock Marathon is set for March 7.
Organizers say discounted registration is available until Nov. 1.
Participants can register online or with a mail-in registration form. Registration closes Feb. 26, though late entries will be accepted if there is space. -
Free physicals for BHS, BJHS athletes slated for Monday
Free physicals for Batesville Junior and Senior High School athletes will be available on Monday at the White River Medical Center Josephine Raye Rogers Center for Women and Imaging building, announced trainer Keith Shireman.
Physicals for the junior high athletes’ will begin at 5:30 p.m. The senior high athletes physicals will begin at 6:45. -
Haigwood pitching for Midland tonight vs. Travelers in NLR
Daniel Haigwood is pitching for Midland again. No, not the high school team in Pleasant Plains.
Haigwood is scheduled to be the starting pitcher for the Midland (Texas) RockHounds tonight when they visit the Arkansas Travelers in North Little Rock’s Dickey-Stephens Park. -
Highwaymen rally, add to Zone 2 win streak
The Batesville Atlas Asphalt Highwaymen made it six in a row with a come-from-behind baseball victory over the Blytheville Casons at the Batesville Recreation Complex on Wednesday.
Trailing 7-3, the Highwaymen ripped off seven runs in the bottom of the third and shut out the Casons the rest of the way while posting a 13-7 decision.
The Highwaymen improved to 6-4 in the 3A American Legion Zone 2 standings. -

Bassmasters to meet Thursday
The Batesville Bassmasters are scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the George Rider Room of First Community Bank to discuss the upcoming Reekie Gardner White River Bass Classic tournament, secretary Colin Patterson said.
The tournament, held annually in conjunction with the White River Water Carnival, has a new name this year. Some of the money raised will go to the Special Olympics, Patterson said.
The group will also discuss its July 11 tournament on Greers Ferry Lake, out of Hill Creek Ramp. The tournament will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 2 the following morning. -
Annual scramble golf tournament for Concord athletics slated July 11
CONCORD — The annual 4-man scramble tournament benefitting Concord Junior and Senior High School athletic programs is scheduled for Tannenbaum Golf Course on July 11, according to a news release from the school.
The entry fee is $50 per person for the Concord Pirate Athletics 4-Man Scramble Golf Tournament. A shotgun start is set for 9 a.m..
Prizes will be awarded per flight and for closest-to-the-pin and longest drive winners.

Highwaymen win pitchers’ duel, slugfest
PARAGOULD — The Atlas Asphalt Highwaymen continued their second-half surge with a doubleheader sweep of Paragould 7Up here Tuesday night.
Both American Legion baseball games counted in the Zone 2 standings, and they provided a little bit of everything for the fans. Batesville left-hander Talan Roepcke won a pitchers’ duel with Paragould righty Josh Everett as the Highwaymen took the opener 3-2.
In the nightcap, Will Lindsey hit a 2-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh as the Highwaymen out-slugged 7Up for a 12-11 victory. -
