HORSESHOE BEND — The Melbourne Bearkatz dominated the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament at their home course Wednesday.
Melbourne carded a 222, 44 strokes better than East Poinsett County and Ridgefield Christian at Cooper’s Hawk Golf Course. EPC defeated Ridgefield in a playoff to claim the second spot.
Bearkat Sam Cooper won medalist honors with a 4-under-par 68. Bradley Lamb added a 73 and Adam Cooper completed the team total with an 81. Ben Cooper’s 86 was thrown out.
The Southside Junior Southerners are looking for a best start plus one, while the Lonoke Junior Jackrabbits are trying to get back to their normal stride.
The Junior Southerners are 3-0, which is the best start of any Southside varsity team since the school started its football program in 2003. Southside fielded its first junior high varsity team the next year and its first high school varsity team in 2006.
The Class 5A-East District season is scheduled to begin Thursday and the Nettleton Junior Raiders are set to visit the Batesville Junior Pioneers in Pioneer Stadium.
“It’s very important to get off to a good start in the conference,” Batesville Coach Doug Walls said. “There will be four teams in first place and four teams in last place after Thursday night.”
Batesville got off to a good start last year with a 29-6 decision over Nettleton. But, the Junior Pioneers lost just one game last year and it cost them the championship.
JACKSON, Tenn. — Katie Beineke and Meghann LaBorn combined for 20 kills but Lyon College couldn’t outpace the unbeaten Union Bulldogs in a 3-0 loss on Tuesday evening in TranSouth Athletic Conference play.
Lyon (6-12 overall, 1-2 TranSouth) had its 2-game winning streak stopped 25-19, 25-19, 25-11. Union improves to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the TranSouth.
Beineke led all Pipers with 12 kills and LaBorn added eight. Setter Julie Arnold pitched in 30 assists.
CAVE CITY — The Cave City Cavewomen collected a conference win over the Perryville Lady Mustangs here Tuesday night.
The game scores were 25-20, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23.
Rachel Roebuck paced Cave City (3-6 overall, 3-2 in the conference) with 25 points, 26 digs and 10 blocks. Kendra Demster added 18 assists and 28 digs while Courtney Ewing contributed 12 points.
The Greene County Tech volleyball teams won two of three 5A-East District matches at Pioneer Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The Junior Lady Eagles defeated the Batesville Junior Lady Pioneers 25-18, 18-25, 25-22 and the Lady Eagles took the varsity high school match 23-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-20, 15-5.
Batesville’s one victory came in a timed eighth-grade contest, 17-14, 19-13.
Pam Kitsmiller and Ron Trusty teamed to win the Baker’s Mixed Doubles Tournament championship recently at Hollywood Bowl.
Kitsmiller and Trusty rolled a 715 series, 11 pins ahead of Yvonne Satterwhite and Tim Johnson.
Rounding out the top six were: Stephanie Anderson-Keith Anderson, 698; Sheila Strain-Jeff Phillips, 679; Michelle Killian-Phillip Neel, 678; Shera Stephens-Oscar Najarrow, 677.
Twenty-nine teams competed in the annual event.
JACKSON, Tenn. — One Lyon College soccer team collected a 2-1 victory while the other battled to a 1-1 tie in TranSouth Athletic Conference openers here Tuesday night.
The Scots improved to 6-1 overall and broke a 2-match losing streak to the Union Bulldogs dating back to the 2007 season. Union fell to 1-6 overall.
All three goals came in the second half and Union’s Paul Turner scored the opener in the 60th minute on a penalty kick.
LOCUST GROVE — The 14th Annual Schoenfeld Headers Mid-America Street Stock Championship is set to conclude Batesville Motor Speedway’s 2009 schedule this weekend.
That is if the weather cooperates. The event was set for last weekend, but got washed out. The forecast is a bit more favorable this week.
CONWAY — The Cave City Junior Cavewomen earned their first win of the season here Monday night with a 2-0 decision over Conway Christian.
Cave City won 25-15, 25-22 as Jennifer Grissom and Nikki Ford collected 11 points apiece. Rachel Woods and Brittany Coleman added eight and six, respectively.
The Junior Cavewomen are 1-1 in the conference and 1-6 overall.
Conway Christian won the senior high match 25-21, 16-25, 25-13, 25-18.
Batesville High’s junior varsity football team improved to 3-0 with a 29-22, come-from-behind victory over the Searcy Lions in Pioneer Stadium Monday night.
With Searcy leading 22-14 at halftime, quarterback Storm Tipton scored on runs of one and 38 yards in the second half, the defense put together a goal line stand and Frank Ramirez intercepted a pass to turn away another scoring threat.
In the first half, Tipton passed to Garrett Yeager for 15 yards and a TD and tailback Corbett Courtney ran nine yards for a score.
PULASKI, Tenn. — The Lyon College Pipers won 15-12 in the fifth-game tiebreaker here Monday night to clip the Martin Methodist RedHawks and collect their first TranSouth Athletic Conference victory.
The match was tied after the home team took the first and third games 25-22 and 25-23. Lyon took the second and fourth games 26-24 and 25-23.
