Junior Pioneers strike fast, win big in Newport
NEWPORT — The Batesville Junior Pioneers jumped on the Newport Greypups early and put on a dominating season-opening performance here Tuesday night.
After several years of tightly-contested football games with Newport, Batesville has turned on the mercy clock the last two seasons. They followed last year’s 36-0 win with a 36-12 decision Tuesday. It was the first time the visitor has won in several years. Batesville has won three straight years. -
BHS blanks West Helena in district openers at Lyon
Batesville’s volleyball teams got off to a good start in the 5A-East District and Becknell Gymnasium.
Playing for the first time in the Lyon College facility, they swept the West Helena junior and senior high squads. The games were played as preliminaries to the Lyon College Pipers’ home-opening match with the Williams Baptist Lady Eagles. WBC won (see report on page 17).
The Junior Lady Pioneers won 25-6. 25-13. The Lady Pioneers won 25-8, 25-7, 25-9. -
WBC sweeps Lyon
The Williams Baptist Lady Eagles stormed into Becknell Gymnasium and earned a 3-0 sweep of the Lyon College Pipers in Lyon’s home opener on Tuesday.
Lyon has now lost five straight to open the season and is idle until a 4-match weekend in the Mazzio’s Tournament at College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
WBC won 25-19, 26-24, 25-23.
Senior outside hitter Lauren Castleberry paced the Pipers with nine kills and teammate Julie Arnold recorded 24 assists. -
Lady Southerners fend off Cavewomen
SOUTHSIDE — The Southside varsity volleyball teams swept Cave City here Tuesday.
The Lady Southerners (1-1) were 3-1 victors. The game scores were 25-21, 25-13, 18-25, 25-19.
“I’m satisfied with our team’s effort. There are some areas where the execution needs to improve, specifically team serving and attacking, but the effort was strong and the team took a step forward tonight,” Southside Coach David Shilkitus said. “Kristen Collins and Lindsey Coe were the keys to our success tonight.” -

’Hounds staying connected to 2008 heartbreaker
Newport Coach Greg Brannon said the Greyhounds remember Dec. 5, 2008, and it means something in 2009.
That Friday night, nine months ago in a Class 4A Playoff semifinal game in Pine Bluff, the Dollarway Cardinals edged the ’Hounds 24-23 in overtime.
“The kids remember that. We were one play away from the finals. They want to reach that point again and we’ve all worked hard to get back to that point again,” he said in a telephone interview Tuesday afternoon. -
Charlie Jeffery inducted into bowling hall of fame
Fifty years ago, Charlie Jeffery began his bowling career. Paying only 45 cents a game or three for a dollar, the then 30-year-old threw a 126 on his first game.
Jeffery was recently inducted into the Arkansas State Bowling Association Hall of Fame. The former owner of what is now known as Hollywood Bowl in Batesville was recognized for his outstanding dedication and service to the sport which has seen its per game price jump to $3. -
Southerner, Panther golfers match scores
Southside and Heber Springs tied for the boys title while Heber Springs ran away with the girls title Monday at The Course at Eagle Mountain.
Southside and Heber Springs each turned in a score of 136. Izard County was third with a 146 and Concord carded a 159.
Preston Harmon of Izard County and Tanner Rockwell of Heber Springs shared medalist honors, each with a 6-over par 42. Southside’s Clayton House was a stroke back and teammate Adam Martin was another stroke off the pace.
Southside’s team score was completed by Chris Martin’s 49. -
Local Bassmasters to meet
The Batesville Bassmasters will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday in the George Rider Room in First Community Bank to discuss an upcoming tournament on Lake Dardanelle, secretary Colin Patterson said.
The tournament will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 12, out of the Russellville state park ramp, he said.
Billy Littleton and Tommy Clark won the Aug. 8 tournament on Norfork Lake. They weighed in 16.96 pounds, including Clark’s 5.74-pounder that was the biggest bass caught during the event. -
Lyon’s Klotzle, Callaway win league honors
Lyon College’s Anja Klotzle and Matt Callaway have been selected as the offensive player of the week and defensive player of the week, respectively, by the TranSouth Athletic Conference for the week of Aug. 24-30, according to a news release from the conference.
Klotzle, a sophomore from Altadena, Calif., notched five goals and five assists in wins over Central Baptist College and Harris-Stowe State. She earned two goals and five assists in the win over CBC and collected her second career hat trick in a victory over Harris-Stowe State. The Pipers are 2-0 this season. -
Melbourne boosters hosting scrimmage
MELBOURNE — The Melbourne Booster Club is hosting the first-ever Red, White and Blue football scrimmage on Thursday, according to a news release.
All of Melbourne’s football teams will be featured in the intrasquad contests. The seventh-graders will get the night started at 6. Junior and senior high junior varsity teams will follow. The price of admission is $1.
