A good happening or two in the early going would be helpful to either of the junior high teams playing their season finale Thursday night in Lepanto, East Poinsett County’s coach said.
“We’re in the same boat,” Brian Weathers said of his Junior Warriors and the Cedar Ridge Junior Timberwolves. “Both teams are extremely young and both teams have struggled, so some early success would be important.”
The Junior Warriors are 2-4-1 overall and in the 2A-3 District. The Junior T-wolves are 1-7 overall and 1-6 in the district.

MOUNTAIN HOME — The Batesville High junior varsity football team suffered its only loss of the season when it fell 32-19 to Mountain Home here Monday night.
Batesville’s only lead came in the first quarter when Colten Bailey passed to Garrett Yeager for 11 yards and a touchdown, and Roberto Jimenez’s point-after kick made the score 7-6.
Batesville’s other scores came when Corbett Courtney ran 11 yards for a TD and Bailey passed to Frank Ramirez for 20 yards and a TD. A kick and a pass failed on the PATs.
The Pioneer jayvees finished 6-1.

If the weather allows, the Batesville Junior Pioneers will be playing for the 5A-East District championship Thursday night in Paragould as they visit the Greene County Tech Junior Eagles.
A win will clinch at least a share of the title. Batesville holds a 1-game lead and the tie-breaker over it’s nearest conference contenders. West Helena is set to visit Pioneer Stadium next week and is not in the title hunt.
It’s been a few years since the Junior Pioneers’ last district championship and one member of the coaching staff is especially hoping the squad can grab the hardware.

Five Lyon College Pipers earned nine or more kills and four were credited with 10 or more digs in a 3-2 victory over the Union University Bulldogs on Monday in a TranSouth Athletic Conference barn-burner at Becknell Gymnasium.
Lyon (10-19, 4-5) won 23-25, 25-16, 25-22, 16-25, 17-15, and ended a 5-match losing streak. Union (23-5, 7-5) had won six of its last seven.

BLYTHEVILLE — We will see if they can keep the rhythm, but the Batesville Pioneers found a winning beat in the second half here Friday night.
After a strange and sudden twist left them down 7-6 at halftime, the Pioneers rallied twice to post a 21-13 high school football victory over the Blytheville Chickasaws.
Batesville Coach Dave King anticipated the question and answered before it was asked: “That was not just the best half of football we’ve played this season, it’s the best we’ve played in a long time.”

Jhessica Martins knocked down a game-high 19 kills and teammate Ann-Katherine Kuehorn blasted 13 more in Martin Methodist’s 3-1 defeat of the Lyon College Pipers Friday night in a TranSouth Athletic Conference match on homecoming at Becknell Gymnasium.
Martin Methodist won 19-25, 25-23, 25-13 and 25-22. The Pipers (9-19 overall, 3-5 TranSouth) have lost five straight and dropped their last two conference games. Martin Methodist (13-11, 4-8) broke a 2-game slide against Lyon College and halted a 3-game losing streak overall.

Stephen Dallas, Sean O’Toole and Gabriel LeBlanc scored two goals apiece and the Lyon College Scots tied a school record for goals in a 10-0 shutout victory over Rust College on Saturday during Homecoming at Huser Field.
The Scots (8-4-0) snapped a 2-game losing streak with the triumph and shut out an opponent for the fifth time this season. Lyon’s 10-goal output equaled the school record originally set on Oct. 3, 2006 in a 10-2 road win over Williams Baptist College.

AUGUSTA — The Red Devils jumped to a 40-6 halftime lead while winning this 2A-3 District contest
Ishma Clark scored on a 68-yard punt return in the first quarter and the junior running back also totaled 101 yards on eight carries. One of those was for 44 yards and a TD.
Sophomore quarterback Cordell Turner threw two TD passes and ran for two TDs. Both TD passes were to senior Matt Bowen. On defense, sophomore Henry Poindexter returned a pass interception for 70 yards and a TD.

HEBER SPRINGS — The mercy clock began running with the start of the third quarter after the Panthers rolled to a 40-0 halftime lead in this 4A-2 District contest.
Braylon Mitchell, a University of Arkansas recruit, scored four TDs while gathering 66 yards on nine carries. Quarterback Wes McMullen completed seven of 10 passes for 163 yards and two TDs. Hunter Derrick and Geoffrey Anderson had the TD receptions.
The Panthers improved to 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the district standings. The Southerners fell to 0-5 and 0-7.

HARRISBURG — Harrisburg running back Zach Pretty and the rest of the Harrisburg Hornets exploited the Cave City Cavemen’s weaknesses en route to a 26-7, high school football victory here Friday night.
It is the only loss of the season for the Cavemen, who fall to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the Class 3A-3 District. Harrisburg has the same records. Three other teams have the same district mark and one will be left out when the playoff tickets are handed out in two weeks.
Hoxie, Earle and Rivercrest are the other teams vying for a spot. The first two remain on Cave City’s schedule.

The Batesville Junior Pioneers held off the Blytheville Junior Chickasaws 22-14 in a key Class 5A-East District football game Thursday night in Pioneer Stadium.
Blytheville took the opening kickoff and marched methodically downfield, converting three third downs. A fumble on the fourth third-down play put Blytheville in a fourth-and-5 situation from the Batesville 25. Jordan Childress made a drive-stopping tackle at the 23 and Batesville took possession there.

CAVE CITY — Cavewomen won three of five volleyball matches with Southside here Thursday night.
The Cavewomen won 13-25, 25-16, 25-9, 25-12. The Junior Cavewomen won 25-27, 25-15, 15-12. The Cavewomen junior varsity won 25-22, 25-23.
The Cavewomen improved to 13-11 and will play in the Class 3A State Tournament in Harrison on Tuesday. The Lady Southerners’ season ended at 8-13.
Statistical leaders for Cave City were: Rachel Roebuck with 23 points, Katie Freeman 21 points, Elisha Ramos 13 points and 40 digs, Courtney Ewing 10 points and Kendra Demster 17 assists.
