Southside juniors stay unbeaten with 2nd-half surge
SOUTHSIDE — The Southside Junior Southerners kept their football record unblemished by outscoring the Lonoke Junior Jackrabbits in the second half here Thursday night on a soggy Stewart Field.
The score was tied at 6 after one half of play. The Junior Southerners won 20-12.
The visitors scored first when tailback Eric Williams ducked and dodged for 20 yards and a touchdown. Southside’s Jake Hendricks intercepted the pass on the 2-point attempt. -
Marshall wins TSAC honor
Lyon College’s Katie Marshall has been selected as the TranSouth Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 14-20, according to a news release from Lyon.
Marshall, a junior forward from Tustin, Calif, earned her second hat trick of the season in a 6-0 shutout victory over the University of the Ozarks. The Lyon forward knocked home three goals and became one of only three Pipers to earn more than one hat trick in her career.
Lyon is a perfect 5-0-1 this season and is currently receiving votes in the NAIA national rankings. -
Batesville sweeps in West Helena
WEST HELENA — Batesville swept West Helena in 5A-East District volleyball action here Thursday night.
The Lady Pioneers won 3-0. The Junior Lady Pioneers won 2-0. No other details were available by press time. -
Flu shortens Lyon schedule
An outbreak of flu shortened Lyon College’s sports schedule this weekend.
The Lyon-Oklahoma Christian men’s soccer match set for this afternoon in North Little Rock was called off due to illness on the Oklahoma squad, and the Lyon-Trevecca Nazarene volleyball match set for Saturday morning at Becknell Gym was also postponed due to illness among the visitors from Nashville, Tenn.
The soccer match will not be rescheduled. The volleyball match between the TranSouth Athletic Conference members has been rescheduled for Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. -
Cave City, Cedar Ridge split conference varsity volleyball
CAVE CITY — The Cave City and Cedar Ridge varsity teams each picked up a win here Thursday night.
The Cavewomen won 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-21) as Rachel Roebuck scored 22 points, including seven aces, and Katie Freeman and Laura Basinger contributed 15 and 11 points, respectively. Basinger served up 10 aces and Freeman added nine. Elisha Ramos was credited with 27 digs.
Coach Crystal Bradley said the Cavewomen totaled “about 30 aces.”
The Cavewomen improved to 4-6 overall and 4-2 in the conference. -
Player, team show compassion
CAVE CITY — The high school and coaches’ offices at Cave City are being flooded with calls and e-mails from around the nation after one of its players and its football program were featured on Yahoo News and other national news outlets, Superintendent Steven Green said.
The story of Caveman Thamail Morgan’s unselfish act of good sportsmanship in a football game versus Yellville-Summit was the lead story on Yahoo News mid-afternoon Thursday after being featured on ArkansasVarsity.com. -
Cavemen asked to work full-time
The Cave City Cavemen have shown flashes of brilliance already this season, but they’ve also shown they’re vulnerable.
Out of the 12 quarters they’ve played, only five have been what Coach Jon Bradley wanted to see. Despite the part-time work, the Cavemen are 3-0 for the first time since their 2007 run to the post season.
However, what has happened the last three weeks isn’t relevant to getting a ticket to the playoffs. Friday night’s Piggott-at-Cave City game is, and Bradley said his team is on a full-time schedule for the first week of Class 3A-3 District action. -
Raiders want to play Pioneers like it’s 2000
When it comes to the Batesville Pioneers, the year 2000 and 21-10 are still the standards for the Nettleton Raiders.
“The only time we’ve won against the Pioneers is when we kept the ball away from them all night,” Nettleton Coach Donnie Tennison remembered. -

Pioneer places second in district golf tourney
PARAGOULD — Batesville’s Garth Branstetter shot a 1-over-par 73 Wednesday at the Paragould Country Club to finish tied for second in the 5A-East District Tournament.
Paragould’s Dylan Bateman won medalist honors with a 2-under 70. He also led the Rams to the team championship. Michael Repress shot a 75 and Noah Tullas and Carson Riggan added 76s for the winning score of 297. -
Cooper shoots 68, ’Katz win region
HORSESHOE BEND — The Melbourne Bearkatz dominated the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament at their home course Wednesday.
Melbourne carded a 222, 44 strokes better than East Poinsett County and Ridgefield Christian at Cooper’s Hawk Golf Course. EPC defeated Ridgefield in a playoff to claim the second spot.
Bearkat Sam Cooper won medalist honors with a 4-under-par 68. Bradley Lamb added a 73 and Adam Cooper completed the team total with an 81. Ben Cooper’s 86 was thrown out. -
Junior Southerners aim to stay on school-best course
The Southside Junior Southerners are looking for a best start plus one, while the Lonoke Junior Jackrabbits are trying to get back to their normal stride.
The Junior Southerners are 3-0, which is the best start of any Southside varsity team since the school started its football program in 2003. Southside fielded its first junior high varsity team the next year and its first high school varsity team in 2006.
