LITTLE ROCK — Lamar is back in the Class 3A football playoffs, but if the Warriors win the championship, would they be able to keep it?
It’s possible a court would have to decide.
The AAA announced Monday the 3A playoffs would start this week with Lamar included. However, the governing body has not made a final decision on whether to keep arguing its case against the school in court. Last week, a judge ruled in favor of Lamar after the school challenged the AAA’s decision ruling a player ineligible, and requiring forfeits of six games.

SPRINGDALE — The Lyon College Scots shot just 33 percent and turned the ball over 19 times in a 68-47 loss to the Ecclesia Royals on Thursday evening in nonconference basketball play at the All-Star Sports Arena.
Lyon (2-3) beat the Royals 64-59 in its home and season opener on Nov. 4.
Thursday night, Slater Belew led Lyon in scoring with 19 points on seven of nine shooting from the field and five of seven from the charity stripe. No other Scot scored more than six points. Guard James Jackson led the team in rebounding (seven) and assists (four).

Young, the Guard’s Assistant Sports Editor, picked 91 winners in 120 tries. Donnie Creech holds the record. He picked 93 winners in the 1998 contest. Young’s number of winners tied Sports Editor Paul Glover’s winning total in 2005 for second best.

The trip will be 100 miles longer, but the Cave City Cavemen are just happy to be playing football this week after all the uncertainties.
Originally scheduled to visit Yellville-Summit in the first round of the Class 3A State Football Playoffs, the Cavemen will now travel to Paris. The shift came about because Lamar was awarded an injunction after being kicked out of the playoffs for using an ineligible player during the season. The legal battle is ongoing, but the Arkansas Activities Association decided to reinstate Lamar and begin the playoffs a week late.

BEEBE — Batesville’s junior high basketball teams broke through here Wednesday night in the losers bracket semifinals of the Beebe-Centennial Bank Tournament.
The Junior Lady Pioneers defeated the Lonoke Junior Lady Jackrabbits 25-17, posting their first win in five games. The Junior Pioneers followed that up with a 24-16 victory over Lonoke’s junior boys — again, the Junior Pioneers’ first win in five tries.

Eight Guard-circulation area golfers and tennis player earned all-state honors.
Unlike some sports, golf and tennis all-state recognition is based on the players’ results in state tournaments. Among the golfers, the top finishers were Izard County seniors Kiley Mettler and Rachel Harmon, who finished second and third, respectively, in the Class 2A State Tournament, and Melbourne freshman Brad Lamb and senior Sam Cooper, who tied for second while leading the Bearkatz to the 2A team title.

Seven Lyon College soccer players were recently named to All-TranSouth Athletic Conference teams and the Pipers led the way with four.
Lyon forward Katie Marshall and midfielder Kristin Maas were named first-team all conference and forwards Anja Klotzle and Katy Smith were honored with second-team all conference selections.
The Pipers recently finished with a record of 10-2-2. They were fourth in the conference standings and reached the conference tournament semifinals before falling to the Martin Methodist RedHawks. Martin Methodist defeated Bethel in the title game.

Jacob Worlow blocked Craig Campbell’s shot and Slater Belew snagged the loose ball as the Lyon College Scots held on for an exciting 86-85 nonconference win over the College of the Ozarks Bobcats Tuesday night in Becknell Gymnasium.
Brandon Cowart put the Scots up by one with eight seconds to play as he drove to the basket from the left side.
Lyon (2-2) ended a 2-game losing string and snapped a 4-game losing streak against the Bobcats. The Bobcats (2-5), who were ranked No. 5 in the NAIA Division II Preseason Poll, have lost three in a row and five of their last six.

The Lyon College Pipers won the battle of unbeatens Tuesday night in Becknell Gymnasium.
Lyon overcame a 10-point deficit and defeated College of the Ozarks 77-71 in a nonconference basketball contest.
The Pipers improved to 5-0, their best start in more than a decade. It was also the first win against Ozarks in five tries.
The Lady Bobcats, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA Preseason Division II poll, fell to 6-1.
