Mixing past with present

June 8, 2009 If I have any regular readers at all, by now, I’m sure they know I’m an fan of Elvis Presley, that I love the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, old movies, vintage houses and hairstyles and daydreaming about an era I didn’t live in.I didn’t name this column “Retro Active” for nothing. I’ve talked about my affinity for pincurls, how I wish I was coordinated enough to do them, so I could have cute hair to go along with my cute vintage outfits that don’t get enough wear.

Additional reads

June 5, 2009 I’ve had several comments on the two columns I’ve written on great novels in recent months, so I thought I’d offer readers a third one.

The fight for life

June 4, 2009 This week Dr. George Tiller, one of the few remaining doctors performing late-term abortions, was shot and killed. The deep and tragic irony here is that his disturbed killer apparently did so in the name of life.Like others in the pro-life community, I found Dr. Tiller’s profession abhorrent and believed it appropriate to protest and criticize his actions. I am deeply ashamed that we live in a society which has legalized the destruction of innocent human life.

Arkansas, in 1984

June 4, 2009 Somehow I fell into ownership of a copy of “The Arkansas Handbook,” subtitled “A Fascinating, Fact-Filled Guide to the Land of Opportunity.”My copy, from 1984, is by Diann Sutherlin Smith. An Internet search confirmed my suspicions: Books with this title have been issued sporadically, and not all by the same author. In other words, updated versions are out there.Still, this one is really interesting, even if its list of places to visit is out of date and admission prices are laughable in this day and age.

Beauty can be found anywhere

June 3, 2009 I am fascinated with things of beauty. Many people don’t know this about me, but I enjoy art. Paintings, drawings, etc. I also enjoy a decent ballet. The poetry of human motion has always captivated my attention — admittedly, mostly on football fields and basketball courts — and what more could ballet possibly represent?

Not par for the course

June 3, 2009 A two-holer.That’s what the Walnut Ridge Country Club will have in 30 days after a court ruling said it has to move seven of the nine holes they now have. The decision handed down by Circuit Judge Harold Erwin of Newport stated the six holes and part of a seventh are in violation of the Federal Aviation Administration because the course is in too close proximity to the airport.

How I spent my summer vacation

June 2, 2009 I remember several grade school years when the first English assignment in September was to write, specifically, “How I spent my summer vacation.” Uh…wasted, mostly, was my usual answer to that. But oh, Lord, some of those summers were so much fun.

Hollywood needs a remake

June 2, 2009 I thought it was pretty bad when I heard that Hollywood was doing a remake of “Footloose.” True, I used to think Kevin Bacon was hot stuff (I am an ’80s girl, after all) and sang loudly and off-key whenever anything from the soundtrack came on the radio, but that does not mean I think the movie is overdue for a remake.
