Brissey returns to childhood home, opens it for public tour

December 2, 2008 Laura Brissey had lived in the house at 781 E. Main St. while she was growing up, so when it came up for sale she was thrilled to buy it as an adult. Today, she and her husband, Phil, and their two children, Luke and Mark, live in the Fitzhugh-Yeatman House, and on Sunday they will open it up to the public as part of the Christmas Tour of Historical Homes in downtown Batesville.

Break-ins reported at rural post offices

December 2, 2008 Two rural Independence County post offices were burglarized over the weekend and an unknown amount of mail was possibly stolen, according to investigators with the Independence County Sheriff's Office.

High-end subdivision could be in city’s future

December 2, 2008 A new subdivision of upscale, low maintenance patio homes could be in the city's future. The idea of building such homes in Batesville was presented to the city's planning and development commission Monday night by Al Crouch, one of the people interested in developing such housing.

December 1, 2008 Editor's note: This column ran previously in the Guard on Dec. 12, 1995. 73 YEARS AGO Fire of undetermined origin completely destroyed the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Bales in west Batesville Saturday night between 7 and 8. The blaze had completely enveloped the building before 7:30 when it was noticed by a neighbor. Two fire trucks made runs to the scene, but the home was too far gone to be saved.

State examines offering self-employed insurance

December 1, 2008 LITTLE ROCK (AP) - Only 5,000 Arkansans of a potential 50,000 have enrolled in a state program to provide health insurance to low-income workers through their employers. The Arkansas Department of Human Services launched ARHealth Networks in 2006 and expanded the enrollment cap in October to 50,000 members. NovaSys Health administers the plan.
