Court shelves suit under the counter

January 7, 2009 LITTLE ROCK - Independence and 19 other Arkansas counties that sued drug manufacturers in an attempt to recoup costs of dealing with the methamphetamine epidemic will not get any money. The counties claimed the drug manufacturers were aware they were selling far more than the legitimate market for ephedrine and pseudoephedrine in over-the-counter cold medication. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine is often used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.

Area school districts see changes in 2008

January 6, 2009 2008 was a year for change in many of the area school districts - some of it welcome and some of it not. The Batesville School District flourished in 2008, seeing enrollment soar with classes full and students on waiting lists for the magnet schools and students being introduced to new technology.

January 6, 2009 Melbourne Fred's donates to Izard sheriff's office MELBOURNE - The Melbourne Fred's Store recently made a monetary donation to the Izard County Sheriff Department's equipment fund. Store Manager Wesley Brooks said his company greatly appreciates the public service provided by Sheriff Tate Lawrence and the deputies throughout the year and that the donation is a way of expressing its appreciation.

Lack of quorum puts city planning business on hold

January 6, 2009 With two members absent and one vacant seat on both the Batesville city board of adjustment and planning commission, city business was put on hold Monday night. The board of adjustment held a public hearing but was unable to vote regarding a conditional use permit for installation of a drive-through window at The Medicine Shoppe at 2080 Harrison St.
