December 31, 2008 Editor's note: This column ran previously in the Guard on Jan. 18, 1996. 73 YEARS AGO Suit has been filed here in Independence County Chancery Court by the Midwest Dairy Co. of Illinois against the city of Batesville, Mayor C.F. Cole and City Marshal B.H. Hinkle. The company is seeking legal action to block the city from collecting a $50 fee for bringing beer into the city to retail houses.

Arrestee wants to call paramedics for cops

December 31, 2008 A Batesville man who wrestled in the floor with police officers trying to arrest him ended up going to jail Sunday afternoon. Around 4:30 p.m., Independence County deputies Dustin Robbins and Randy Jones responded to an address on Grace Street where a man and his son were fighting.

Plants closing

December 31, 2008 NEWPORT (AP) - Two factories in Newport employing a total of 85 people have closed and the work will be moved to Pocahontas. America's Choice Products LLC and Newport Elastomer, both owned by North Smithfield, R.I.-based Newgrange Group LLC, closed Dec. 22. ACP makes shoes, pet toys and gel insoles. Newport Elastomer produces rubber pellets used for ACP products.

Pipeline proposal to be topic

December 31, 2008 ASH FLAT - Mayors of all towns in Sharp County and quorum court members have been invited to a Sharp County Natural Gas Project meeting set for 10 a.m. Jan. 12 in the main courtroom of the courthouse in Ash Flat, County Judge Larry Brown said.

Sheriff: Arson investigation at standstill

December 31, 2008 Victims of recent arsons in Batesville won't cooperate with authorities for fear of deportation, Independence County Sheriff Keith Bowers said this morning. The Criminal Investigations Division of the sheriff's office has been investigating three arsons in the past two weeks, but now those investigations "have been brought to a standstill, due to the victims of the crimes not cooperating with us," Bowers said in a press release.

December 30, 2008 Editor's note: This column ran previously in the Guard on Jan. 17, 1996. 73 YEARS AGO There is at least one nickel slot machine that won't be paying off for its owner or its sucker customers. The machine wa confiscated on Monday at the Rendezvous Dance Hall on the Little Rock Highway by chief deputy George M. Evans and destroyed at the county sheriff's office. Confiscation of gambling machines follows an edict of Circuit Judge Marcus S. Bone.

Bonnie Rush to retire

December 30, 2008 MELBOURNE - Bonnie Rush of the Izard County Sheriff's Department is retiring from county government after 30 years of service. Rush was given a retirement party by co-workers earlier in the month. She began her employment with Izard County in January 1979 in the county judge's office when Larry Arnold was judge.

Bryant resigns

December 30, 2008 Batesville Planning Commission member Tommy Bryant is resigning his seat, effective Wednesday. The letter of resignation was sent to Mayor Rick Elumbaugh and other planning commission members Monday morning.

Death believed suicide

December 30, 2008 When Denny Joe Stout didn't show up for work as a sign erector for the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department Monday morning, fellow workers knew something was wrong. And, after being unable to contact him, the Independence County Sheriff's Office was called to do a welfare check at his home.
