Officers called to intervene between husband, wife

January 23, 2009 A Batesville man has found himself facing a number of charges after an argument turned physical with his wife early Wednesday morning. According to a report filed with the Independence County Sheriff's Department, officers were dispatched to a residence on Liberty Lane at about 1 a.m., after 911 dispatch received a phone call in which a man and woman could be heard yelling.

Sharp County man acquitted in sexual assault case

The city parks and recreation commission met Wednesday night and saw pictures of the city's facilities at Fitzhugh Park and the Batesville Recreation Complex, more commonly known as the north complex.

Council adds officer

January 22, 2009 Drivers in Batesville better heed traffic laws, as the city plans to hire an officer to work nothing but traffic. The Batesville City Council met Tuesday night for a final budget working session before the Jan. 27 regular council meeting. The 2009 budget has to be approved by ordinance before the end of the month.

Fire destroys building, equipment

January 22, 2009 HORSESHOE BEND - A soot-covered, partially melted fire engine was sitting in front of a water-soaked fire department this morning and officials are still unsure of what started the fire. "The fire got so hot that the steel beams were weakened," Horseshoe Bend Fire Chief Mike Hilliker told the Guard this morning.

Literacy council seeks students, tutors to help

January 21, 2009 Chuck Jones, co-founder of the Literacy Council of Independence County, says that 25 percent of the residents in Arkansas over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma. Of that, more than 162,000 Arkansans have less than an eighth-grade education, he told the Batesville Rotary Club members at a recent meeting.
