December 2, 2008 2 plead not guilty in teen attack FAYETTEVILLE (AP) - A brother and sister have pleaded not guilty to attacking a 17-year-old Fayetteville high school student at a party. Authorities charged 20-year-old John Bently Ober with attempted first-degree murder in the Oct. 25 attack. He is accused of striking the teen in the back with a straight-edged hammer, causing the teen's lung to collapse. Eighteen-year-old Amanda Rose Ober is charged with second-degree battery. Police say she cut the teen while swinging a knife at him.

Cedar Ridge students learn about interviews

December 2, 2008 NEWARK - During an oral communication class, Cedar Ridge High School English teacher Cheryl Toon recently had a project for students to learn proper procedures involved in an interview. In these "mock interviews," the students learned how to develop a resume and cover letter, how to dress and conduct themselves appropriately in a formal job interview, and how to close the interview process by sending a follow-up letter after an interview.

Festival of Lessons and Carols slated

Vandals target Newark signs

December 2, 2008 Several street and road signs, along with the mayor's mail box, were damaged during a vandalism spree in Newark early Thanksgiving morning. Cpl. Duane Grice, with the Independence County Sheriff's Office, said that Newark Mayor Randy Hendrix reported several street signs on Long Street had been run over during the night.
