Three children die in fire

February 20, 2009 MADISON (AP) — Three children died early today in a house fire in eastern Arkansas, though the mother was able to rescue an infant sibling from the flames.The four-bedroom brick home was fully engulfed when emergency responders arrived, Madison Police Chief Jonathan Parks said.Parks said the baby is 6 months old. The ages of the children who died was 13, 10 and 4.“All of them, I knew well,” Parks said. “It’s a small community.”

Cave City woman gives direction to toddlers

February 20, 2009 The Grapevine Daycare Center, operating in conjunction with the New Life Family Church of God in Batesville, has a new director, Ramona A. Brewer, who is a certified child development associate.“I just recently moved back to Cave City from El Paso (Texas) where I worked as the lead teacher with the Army Child Development Centers,” Brewer said during a recent interview. “I graduated from Cave City High School in 1994. I have a background in child care, and experience as the owner and director of Leaps and Bounds, a home preschool program.”

Children collect items for animals

February 20, 2009 SOUTHSIDE — Southside Elementary School’s 29 classes ran a contest recently to see which classroom could collect the most “wish list” items for the Humane Society of Independence County.The contest was implemented by student Erin Lorch as an extension of a 4-H project. Erin is president of the Southside Elementary K-Kids, and the Southside K-Kids (62 student members) were involved in the entire project, from collecting and sorting the items to making the delivery to the humane society and touring the facility.

Police suspect girl’s boyfriend

February 20, 2009 POCAHONTAS (AP) — Police have arrested a Hoxie teenager, suspecting him of killing his girlfriend’s father, and say the dead man’s wife helped cover up the crime.Greg Anthony Smith, 19, was being held in the death of Ronald Dale Cathey, 51, of Pocahontas. Cathey’s body was found in the Black River near Clover Bend on Jan. 24. Cathey’s wife, Shirley Sue Cathey, 34, was being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.Smith was dating the Catheys’ daughter, prosecutor Henry Boyce said.

Family history workshop set

Sheriff: Body found identified as missing boy

February 19, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Searchers on Wednesday found the body of a 3-year-old Chidester boy missing for more than a week, only a few hundred yards down the shoreline from where his mother kept an anxious vigil on White Oak Lake.Ouachita County Sheriff David Norwood told The Associated Press that rescuers found the body of Dominick Arceneaux, barefoot and clad in blue jean shorts, floating in the water around 11:45 a.m. Dominick’s body rested on the water only 10 feet from the shore, Norwood said.

Lyon College to host prayer labyrinth

February 19, 2009 A prayer labyrinth at Lyon College will be open to the community Feb. 25-27. Visitors will be given instructions and guidance through the walk.The labyrinth will be made of canvas and measures 18 feet in diameter. Participants will be asked to take their shoes off, so please bring socks. More than one person can walk the labyrinth at a time. The journey usually takes 20-30 minutes.

Church to hold revival

February 19, 2009 Harbor Lights Temple will hold a revival starting Monday and continuing through Feb. 27. Services begin at 7:30 each evening. The evangelist will be the Rev. February 19, 2009 CAVE CITY — Stainless steel pots and pans, of every shape and size, are stacked into rows big and small.Hot dog rotisseries, coffee makers, twin-basket fryers and milk-shake machines — just some of what can be found — line rows and rows of shelves from top to bottom. The brick and metal building, sitting discreetly between the town post office and a thrift store along Main Street in Cave City, might not seem like much on the outside.
