Concord council OKs budget

December 16, 2008 CONCORD - The Concord Town Council approved a 2009 budget last week that lists about $135,000 in anticipated expenditures, Recorder-treasurer Jayne Pettit said. That includes $75,530 in the general fund and $58,410 in the street fund. The largest line item in the general fund is $53,268 for personnel and benefits.

Christmas Brings Hope, food to needy families

December 16, 2008 As it has for over 20 years, a large group of volunteers from across Independence County came together to provide boxes of food to the less fortunate Saturday morning. Ted Hall, with the Christmas Brings Hope program, said volunteers delivered 1,150 food boxes to families in Independence County in this year's food drive.

Rain, sleet turn roads dangerous

December 16, 2008 Motorists inched along this morning on slippery bridges, overpasses and roads, after freezing rain left a coating of ice on many state roads and highways. In central Arkansas, traffic crept along Interstate 430 this morning, while many truck drivers pulled aside near the Interstate 40 interchange to avoid the icy roads.

December 15, 2008 Editor's note: This column ran previously in the Guard on Dec. 27, 1995. 73 YEARS AGO Ira Nelson Barnett, 69, veteran merchant and banker of Batesville and well known throughout all of north Arkansas, died this morning at 6 a.m. following an illness of two weeks. His entire family was with him when he passed away. His condition was regarded as critical for the past several days.

December 15, 2008 MELBOURNE - The Izard County Sheriff's Department arrested a woman on late afternoon on Dec. 9 after Deputy Carl Russell saw a vehicle being driven with two flat tires in the downtown area of Calico Rock.

Businesses to have open houses
