Tax passes

December 10, 2008 On a night filled with mixed emotion by organizers, the Independence County special election for a quarter-cent economic development sales tax passed by nearly a two-to-one margin. Unofficial tallies from the election commission put the numbers at 1,674 votes in favor (66 percent) and 855 against (34 percent).

Greenland council approves sales-tax election for school

December 9, 2008 GREENLAND (AP) - The Greenland City Council has approved a special election for voters to decide whether to extend a 1-cent sales tax to benefit the financially troubled local school district. The city council on Monday approved a special election for March 10.

De Queen woman, aunt of slain teen, found safe

December 9, 2008 De QUEEN (AP) - Police say a De Queen woman who disappeared Friday afternoon has been found safe in Mexico. Authorities were looking into the disappearance of 39-year-old Sandra Lerma, particularly because the woman's niece was found murdered earlier this year.

Judge refuses to open jail record in Pressly case
