Closings for Thanksgiving set

November 25, 2008 Several local, state and federal offices will be closed for Thanksgiving, but will resume normal service on Monday. Batesville School District will be closed Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Old Independence Regional Museum will be closed Thursday and Friday, but will be open on Saturday and Sunday.

The agenda includes a request from Old Independence Regional Museum, comments from citizens regarding an apartment complex and Dumpsters, an ordinance to update competitive bid requirements to state guidelines, an ordinance to correct annexation regarding the Gaston property, a report from Public Works Engineer Damon Johnson and comments from Mayor Rick Elumbaugh.

Attorney: 8 new charges filed against Alamo

November 25, 2008 LITTLE ROCK - Jailed evangelist Tony Alamo faces eight new federal charges after his arrest for allegedly taking children across state lines for sex, his defense lawyer said today. John Wesley Hall Jr. told The Associated Press that the charges are similar to those already facing Alamo, 74. Hall declined to specifically name the charges.

School looking for used van

November 25, 2008 CONCORD - The Concord School District is looking for a good used van, Superintendent Mike Davidson said this morning. The school board, during a regular meeting Monday, authorized Davidson to purchase such a van if he can find one at a good price.

Home tours scheduled

November 25, 2008 They'll be hanging a shining star from the highest bough - and anywhere else, too, for the upcoming Christmas Tour of Historical Homes. Batesville Preservation Association will host a holiday homes tour from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 7 (Pearl Harbor Day).

November 24, 2008 Cunningham wins scholarship Julie Cunningham, a 1991 Batesville High School graduate, has been accepted for admissions to Lyon College and has been awarded a Transfer Scholarship. Each year Lyon College awards scholarships to outstanding applicants who show special promise as productive members of the College community and valuable contributors in the field of their choice. Based upon demonstrated record of academic success and leadership, Cunningham has been awarded the scholarship valued at $4,500 per year.

November 24, 2008 Editor's note: This column ran previously in the Guard on Dec. 6, 1995. 73 YEARS AGO New allotments of WPA money for Batesville and Independence County were approved by Washington officials today, according to W.R. Dyess, state WPA administrator. The allotment is for $165,055; $20,955 is for a six-mile improvement of a road out of Batesville with $144,000 going for improvement of county roads.

Two Lyon students net funding

November 24, 2008 Lyon College students Keri Rogers of Evening Shade and Erick Oyemaja of Batesville have been awarded Willard and Pat Walker Scholarships. The college received $20,000 from the Willard & Pat Walker Charitable Foundation Inc. over the summer to provide two need-based scholarships for students.

ASU presents diplomas

November 24, 2008 Jonesboro - More than 300 graduates were awarded diplomas at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro during summer commencement ceremonies in the Convocation Center. Dr. Robert L. Potts, chancellor at ASU-Jonesboro, presented the various diplomas.
