Arrest made in chiropractor’s assault, robbery

January 29, 2009 A man who allegedly robbed a Batesville chiropractor and was getting ready to flee the state has turned himself in to Independence County authorities. According to a court affidavit filed by Independence County Sheriff's Detective Jeff Sims, Justin Dow Barnes, 25, of Cave City turned himself in at the Independence County jail around 7 p.m. Monday, after Barnes' stepfather called Sims and made the arrangements. A description of Barnes had been released earlier in the week.

Large number of poles downed

January 29, 2009 Thousands woke up this morning still without electricity. According to Leah Rouse, marketing director of North Arkansas Electric, about 27,000 homes are in the dark in Baxter and Fulton counties as well as parts of Sharp, Stone and Izard counties.

Shelters open

January 29, 2009 Emergency shelters for those who are without power or heat have been opened in Independence and Sharp counties, according to the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management and local sources. At 9:30 this morning, however, people in two of the shelters in Sharp County were being moved to another location because of a lack of water service and a shortage of space.

Hail. Judge Hail, born in 1846 in Lawrenceburg, Tenn., has been a soldier, farmer, judge, newspaper man and businessman.

Council OKs taxi franchises, budget

January 28, 2009 For a while, Batesville did not have a taxi service. Now, it will have three. The Batesville City Council met Tuesday afternoon, moving its meeting time up because of inclement weather. The council had to meet before the end of month to approve the 2009 budget and to hear the mayor's State of the City address. ‘Hee-Haw’ star LuLu Roman speaks about orphanage, life

January 28, 2009 SIDNEY - There's more to LuLu Roman than meets the eye. And less - she's lost 200 pounds since her days as a comedienne on the popular, long-running television show "Hee-Haw." Roman is a singer, songwriter, author, comedienne, actress, artist (she paints flower blossoms, among other things) and a tireless worker for Christ.

Newport imposes curfew

January 28, 2009 NEWPORT - Starting at sundown today, the city of Newport has imposed a dusk to dawn curfew, according to officials. The curfew is being implemented as a safety measure during the current period of extreme icy weather.

Thousands without power

January 28, 2009 With the roadways beginning to thaw and the winter precipitation coming to an end from this ice storm, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department has begun trading the salt and sand mixture for the manpower needed to remove debris.
