Recliner, washer missing

December 26, 2008 A Batesville man has reported the theft of $2,700 worth of home appliances and furniture. Jason Turnkey told police that sometime between Dec. 7 and Tuesday morning, someone removed two locks off a storage building he had rented on East Harrison Street, to get to the items.

Hay bales burned at Rosie

December 26, 2008 Several traffic violations, as well as drug charges, have been filed against a Batesville man following an incident just before 2 p.m. Sunday. Independence County Deputy Brent Ward said he was on patrol on east Harrison Street when he met a car traveling at a high rate of speed and smoking very badly.

Envelope with $600 returned to woman

December 26, 2008 SEARCY (AP) - A Walmart Supercenter employee in Searcy listened to his conscience this holiday season when he came across an envelope filled with cash in a shopping cart. "I was working my shift until 11 p.m. and had about 20 minutes to go," said Brian Metz, a graduate of Harding University with a degree in Biblical languages. "I was the only cart wrangler out there. This lady handed me her cart after she finished unloading her purchases and I saw something still in the cart."

Texas pilot, wife injured

December 26, 2008 Benny and Linda Green had loaded their small airplane in Rockwall, Texas, with presents and, not unlike Santa and his reindeer, were flying into Batesville on Christmas Eve. However, something went wrong with the Texas couple's landing, sending both to the hospital.

Airport plane crash injures two

December 24, 2008 The pilot of a twin engine Beechcraft plane and his wife were injured when they ran off the end of the runway at Batesville Regional Airport around 1:45 p.m. Wednesday. The pilot, as yet unidentified by authorities, suffered major head trauma. The extent of his wife's injuries are not believed to be as serious.

December 24, 2008 Pro baseball NEW YORK (AP) - Roger Clemens' former personal trainer filed paperwork preserving the right to sue the 7-time Cy Young Award winner in New York. Brian McNamee, who told federal investigators that Clemens used performance-enhancing drugs, contends the pitcher defamed him after McNamee spoke to investigators for former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell. The summons, filed in Queens Supreme Court last week, preserves McNamee's right to sue, Richard Emery, a lawyer for McNamee, said.

December 24, 2008 Editor's note: This column ran previously in the Guard on Jan. 5, 1996. 73 YEARS AGO Arkansas College must raise $6,000 by Dec. 31 or lose more than $8,000 pledged by the state churches. Dr. W.S. Lacy, president of the college, is making an appeal to alumni and friends of the school to help raise the money. The need is urgent, Dr. Lacy said, as the money must be raised to relieve the Synod of paying $46,500.

Local offices closing

December 24, 2008 Several local, state and federal offices will close for the Christmas holiday. Christmas Eve is today and Christmas Day is Thursday. Batesville Public Schools will be out for winter break through Jan. 2, 2009. Classes will resume Jan. 5.
