Fire destroys building, equipment

January 22, 2009 HORSESHOE BEND - A soot-covered, partially melted fire engine was sitting in front of a water-soaked fire department this morning and officials are still unsure of what started the fire. "The fire got so hot that the steel beams were weakened," Horseshoe Bend Fire Chief Mike Hilliker told the Guard this morning.

Literacy council seeks students, tutors to help

January 21, 2009 Chuck Jones, co-founder of the Literacy Council of Independence County, says that 25 percent of the residents in Arkansas over the age of 25 do not have a high school diploma. Of that, more than 162,000 Arkansans have less than an eighth-grade education, he told the Batesville Rotary Club members at a recent meeting.

January 21, 2009 A Magazine man found himself in handcuffs and headed to jail following a fight at a local apartment complex Friday night. Independence County Deputy Fred Friar said he was dispatched to an apartment complex on College Ave. around 10:45 p.m. where two men were reportedly fighting.

Farm accident claims life

January 21, 2009 A farming accident claimed the life of an Oil Trough man Tuesday morning when his clothing apparently became entangled in the moving parts of a piece of machinery. The body of 44-year-old Russell Davis was found near a running tractor and spreader machine by an employee who came to check on him around noon.

Downed computers now running

January 21, 2009 Batesville School District computers had been down due to a computer virus, but they are now running smoothly. Debbie Miller, director of curriculum and instruction, said at the school board meeting Monday that representatives from the state Department of Education came to the school and "stayed with us the whole week and that's just about unheard of. We didn't realize we had the infection."

Warrants issued

January 20, 2009 Two women have been arrested for cashing checks on a Batesville woman's account, and now felony charges have been filed against a Little Rock man who allegedly provided them with the checks they were forging.

Charges filed in farm theft

January 20, 2009 Bond has been set at $50,000 for 25-year-old Darrell D. Massey of Batesville who is accused of stealing farm and poultry equipment from a local farm. Independence County Sheriff's Investigator Rob Leonard, in a circuit court affidavit, said the charges stemmed from Aug. 20, 2008 when Linda Moore reported theft of the equipment to Deputy Shawn Stephens.
