Driver of wrecked vehicles tells wild stories of horses, abduction

June 1, 2009 ASH FLAT — A Sharp County woman arrested after wrecking two vehicles was either telling whoppers or was hallucinating under the influence of drugs, Sharp County Sheriff Dale Weaver said this morning.Sarah Mae Johnson, 24, was charged in Sharp County Circuit Court with residential burglary and motor vehicle theft.She was arrested shortly after 4:40 a.m. Friday after wrecking the stolen car.

Cushman ends 80 years of education

June 1, 2009 CUSHMAN — How do you end 80 years of learning, friendships, progress and opportunity?If you’re Cushman School District, you do so with a small reception, a lot of hugs and even some tears.Friday was the last day of school for Cushman, which is being annexed into the Batesville School District starting with the next academic year. As faculty and staff gathered into the cafetorium for what was likely the last gathering of those particular persons, they were honored with gifts for their respective years of service and said goodbye to one another.

Batesville to receive $1.8M grant

June 1, 2009 Washington, D.C. — The city of Batesville has been awarded a $1.8 million economic development grant to convert Emerson Climate Technologies’ White-Rodgers facility, a former machining facility, into a manufacturing plant, a process that is expected to create hundreds of jobs for the region, according to a news release.

Melbourne man graduates, becomes wildlife officer for Craighead County

May 29, 2009 MAYFLOWER — An Izard County man was among 17 cadets who recently completed over 900 hours of intensive training to become wildlife officers with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.Graduating was Jeffrey “Jeff” Cowan of Melbourne, who will be assigned as a wildlife officer in Craighead County.The group studied at the H.C. “Red” Morris Training Center east of Mayflower on Lake Conway.Graduation ceremonies for the 2009 cadet class took place May 21 at the Arkansas State Capitol.

Karaoke benefit set for July 13

May 29, 2009 The fifth annual Karaoke For A Cause benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Central Arkansas will be July 13 at Josie’s at the Lockhouse in Batesville. The event features food, silent and live auctions and two categories of competition: Soloists and group.

May 29, 2009 Independence County DARThe bi-annual memorial service was held Saturday by the Independence County Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, at the gazebo at Oaklawn Cemetery in Batesville.The prelude was played on the bagpipes by Nancy Love of Lyon College Pipe Band. Chaplain Fern Fike and regent Linda Carol Cooper conducted the ceremony. Mary Miller read the names of deceased chapter members buried in Oaklawn, and Dora Kate Lee read those buried in other cemeteries.

Cave basketball squads to attend summer camps

May 29, 2009 CAVE CITY — The senior boys and girls basketball teams at Cave City school will travel to different states this summer in an effort to improve their games.The school board voted unanimously Tuesday to allow the out-of-state trips, Superintendent Steven Green said.Boys’ Coach Jimmy Hodges will take his senior high team to a three-day camp in Murray, Ky., in June.Girls’ Coach Russell Fowler and his team will travel to Fort Walton Beach, Fla., for a four-day camp in June.
