Kindergartners meet Smokey the Bear

May 6, 2009 SOUTHSIDE — All 130 students in Southside’s kindergarten classes got to visit with Smokey the Bear when the Arkansas Forestry Commission recently presented a fire prevention program, Forest Ranger Kenny Smothers said.The Smokey the Bear Program was presented by rangers Danny Crumley, Todd Wilson and Smokey the Bear (Ranger Britt Pearce).A short video was shown to the students.“After the video, there was a time for questions and comments about the video,” Smothers said.

Local schools on Just for the Kids Arkansas’ higher performing list

May 6, 2009 LITTLE  ROCK — The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), one of the most respected educational data and research organizations in the country, announced its latest Just for the Kids Arkansas list of higher performing schools recently. The Higher Performing Schools List is comprised of public elementary and middle schools in Arkansas. Forty schools were recognized for their achievement in the areas of college and career readiness for both math and literacy.  Eighty-seven schools were recognized for achievement in either math or literacy.

SUV crash stops trains in Hardy

May 6, 2009 ASH FLAT — Trains through Hardy were shut down from 4:47 this morning until almost 7 a.m. because of a wrecked vehicle on the railroad tracks, Sharp County sheriff’s Investigator Mark Counts said.He said an SUV occupied by three Hardy men who had been vacationing out of state went out of control north of Hardy by the Citgo station, careening off the road and stopping atop the railroad track.“The driver went to sleep,” Counts said.

Planning OKs subdivision, stalls on apartment complex

May 6, 2009 The Batesville Planning Commission Monday night gave its approval for the building of high-end patio homes project proposed by Al Crouch of Batesville.Batesville Public Works Engineer Damon Johnson told the commission that Crouch, who plans to build the subdivision on Mountain Ridge Road, off Gap Road, had substantially met all city engineering and zone code requirements.“He’s worked hard to meet city regulations and go above and beyond in his planning,” Johnson said.The plan must now be sent on to the full city council for final approval.
