Local doctors find way to Peru

May 18, 2009 To have the volleyball-sized tumor on his thigh removed, Edgar Mendoza Enco of Chancay, Peru was told his leg would have to be amputated. Doctors at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in Little Rock, however, are hoping to find a way for Edgar to keep his leg, tumor-free.

Ozarka picks Dawe

May 18, 2009 Melbourne — Ozarka College officials have announced the appointment of Dr. Richard Dawe as president of the college in Melbourne. Dawe, a native of the northern Arkansas/southern Missouri region, will assume the presidency on July 1.For the past year Dawe has served as vice chancellor of planning and organizational development at Ventura County Community College District, a three-college district of 36,000 students in California.

Fishermen find body

May 18, 2009 The body of a man who disappeared in the White River a week ago has been found.Late Saturday night, fishermen discovered the body of Aaron Marks below Lock & Dam 1 on the White River, Sheriff Keith Bowers said in a press release this morning.“Adam Branscum called in to dispatch at approximately 10:46 p.m. stating that he was fishing on the White River and had possibly found Marks,” Bowers said.Branscum and Heath Duncan were bow fishing when they discovered Marks, according to Stacy Caplener, assistant director of Office of Emergency Management.

Lyon graduates 84 students

May 15, 2009 Lyon College graduated 84 students at its 137th commencement May 9. The college conferred 44 bachelor of arts degrees and 40 bachelor of science degrees. The following students graduated during commencement: Bald Knob — Steven L. Goacher, BS in biology

Several communities across the state are doing their part to provide no cost or low cost activities for families by offering outdoor movies. Call it the 21st century version of the old drive-in movie; however, you don’t drive into these showings. Instead, bring lawn chairs or blankets and picnic baskets and settle down and enjoy the show.
