June 3, 2009 No suspects have been named in the reported theft of an $1,800 diamond engagement ring, $70 cash and 20 music CDs from the vehicle of Matthew B. June 3, 2009 The Batesville Planning Commission Monday night conducted a public hearing to consider a building permit for a commercial building on Harrison Street just west of Car Mart.Frank Tripp came to the board, saying he wishes to construct a building on property he owns at the intersection of Harrison Street and Jennings Lane, a street not yet fully developed but would be built to city codes and turned over to the city once completed.

Items recovered in store burglary

June 3, 2009 A citizen’s call to police early this morning led to the arrest of an 18-year-old Cushman man for burglary and recovery of $2,100 worth of merchandise, according to Independence County Sheriff Keith Bowers.“At approximately 3:28 a.m., a citizen called Batesville Dispatch and advised that he was witnessing a person breaking into the Cushman store,” Bowers said.“Officers were dispatched to the area and before they arrived the witness advised that the suspect had ran from the store, leaving his four-wheeler.”

Firefighters busy with wrecks, fires

June 3, 2009 CAVE CITY — Firefighters at Cave City were busy over the weekend, fighting two house fires, extricating one person from a traffic accident and helping Evening Shade firefighters extricate others from another car wreck, Cave City Fire Chief Ronny Milligan said.The flurry of events began with a house fire reported by a passer-by at 3:15 p.m. Friday.“When we arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the rear of the house, around the front door and from the gables of the house,” Milligan said.

June 3, 2009 ASH FLAT — A man facing 32 years in prison who escaped from the Sharp County jail Monday night was arrested by Pine Bluff authorities about 11 this morning, Sheriff Dale Weaver said.Details were sketchy about the arrest, but Sharp County dispatch was notified via a phone call that 27-year-old Michael Shawn Lewis was caught “in a room, probably a motel room,” and that a woman was with him, Weaver said.It was not known whether the woman was his wife, but Weaver said he had given Pine Bluff officials a description of the vehicle she drives.
