Southside choir performs well

June 17, 2009 SOUTHSIDE — Southside High School has some of the best singers in the state — and the nation, for that matter. The SHS Choir Department ended the 2008-09 school year very well, according to choir director Angela Weaver. While competing at the region level, the Senior Concert Choir and Senior Madrigals both earned Division I (Superior) ratings in both performance and sight reading categories.

June 17, 2009 CALICO ROCK — Businesses that are seeking to expand but are not yet in a position to construct a facility and hire a traditional workforce may be able to utilize inmate labor.The North Central Arkansas Regional Economic Development board met June 9 in Mountain Home and heard from Steve Edwards from Arkansas Correctional Industries (ACI), who described a unique program that provides inmate labor to businesses seeking to expand.

Johnson picked as chamber president

June 17, 2009 The Batesville Area Chamber of Commerce has a new president.Crystal Johnson was announced this morning as the selection. She will start work June 29.Originally from Fayetteville, Johnson said her background is in sales and marketing, and when she heard the chamber had an opening she thought it would be a good opportunity to make a difference in the Batesville and Independence County communities.“I’m excited,” she said this morning by phone. “Batesville has so much to offer and we don’t advertise enough.”

Stimulus cash to allow state to hire up to 400

June 16, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Arkansas officials say they expect to hire up to 400 temporary workers using stimulus money, but are warning applicants the jobs won’t be there when the federal funds run out.Representatives from several state agencies held a town hall meeting Monday to discuss Arkansas’ expected $2.9 billion share of the federal stimulus package. The meeting in Little Rock was the sixth in a series of forums planned around the state this summer.

Desha hydroponic farm gets new owners, name

June 16, 2009 DESHA — Last year there was a national shortage of mint in the culinary world; earlier this year it was chives.As a result of these shortages, a local family was able to step in and help fill the void from their herb farm at Desha.Stan and Kim Hinkle are the new owners of a hydroponic operation that raises nearly a dozen type herbs for grocery stores all over the country.Since taking over the operation just a short time ago, the couple decided to upgrade and refurbish the farm.
