Arrest made at scene of head-on crash

June 22, 2009  A man who reportedly lost control of his car and struck another vehicle while rounding a curve on East Main Street near Highland Street Friday night has been charged with driving while intoxicated.Independence County Deputy Anthony Carter said he responded to the scene of the accident at the intersection of Highland Street around 8:15 p.m.Carter said that while getting information from one of the drivers, identified as Aaron Fulcher, 24, of 145 Country Lane, he saw indications that Fulcher might be drunk.

Arrests reported

June 22, 2009  Two people were arrested shortly around midnight Wednesday when the driver was stopped for not having any tail lights on his car.Deputy Ernie Gillihan said he was behind a 1994 Buick on East Boswell Street in Batesville when he noticed the faulty lights and stopped the driver, identified as Tyler Forrest.Gillihan said a statewide computer check of the car’s three occupants revealed that one of the passengers, Teejay Smart, was wanted in Newport and he was placed under arrest.

Heat advisory issued

June 22, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for eastern and west-central Arkansas.The weather service says high temperatures today will reach the 90s statewide under sunny skies followed by overnight lows in the low to mid 70s.Skies are to remain clear through the remainder of the week with highs expected in the 90s through Friday.

Wild hogs: Loose pigs shut down interstate

June 22, 2009 LITTLE ROCK (AP) — Woo pig uh oh.Arkansas State Police say an overturned tractor trailer on Interstate 430 has closed a stretch of the highway connecting Little Rock to North Little Rock.State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says the crash happened at 3:30 this morning. At 11 this morning Sadler said troopers and others were still trying to catch the hogs and a detour was in effect for commuters heading both north and south.

Desha death ruled suicide

June 22, 2009 The weekend death of a 34-year-old Desha man has been ruled a suicide, according to the Independence County Sheriff’s Office.Deputy Shawn Stephens said he was dispatched to the home of Rodney Melton at 60 Dishongh St., just before 9 Friday night where Melton’s father, Dean Melton, reported finding his son’s body hanging in a bathroom of the home.According to Stephens, Dean Melton and Jerry Sandefur had gone to the home to check  on Rodney Melton and weren’t able to get in.

Judsonia teen drowns

June 22, 2009 HEBER SPRINGS — At approximately 11 a.m. Friday, Cleburne County deputies were dispatched to a possible drowning in the “trouble island” area of Dam Site Park on Greers Ferry Lake, Sheriff Marty Moss said in a news release.When the deputies arrived, 14-year-old Bill Miller Horton of Judsonia had been brought to shore and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was in progress, Moss said.“Horton was transported to Baptist Medical Center where attempts to revive him were unsuccessful.

Third arrest made in CR burglaries

June 22, 2009 MELBOURNE — A third suspect has been arrested in three May burglaries and one attempted burglary of businesses in Calico Rock. Arrested Thursday was Jeff Shankle, 22 of Batesville who had been wanted for questioning shortly after the crimes occurred. Sheriff Tate Lawrence said at the time of these crimes Shankle was wanted on a Department of Correction absconder warrant and was located in Missouri.

‘Mr. Whitt’ retires

June 22, 2009 SOUTHSIDE — Bill Whittington of Southside retired this year from 30 years of music education and administration.Known as “Mr. Whitt,” he was a choral director and band director at Southside High School for 20 years. He was an administrator at Evening Shade School. He taught band at Newark High School and finished his last year at Cushman High School this year.He has led singing at North Heights Church of Christ for 30 years and owned Whittington’s Home Furnishings for five years.
