Blackberry Bushes to perform

June 24, 2009 Calico Rock — The Blackberry Bushes from Seattle will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Calico Rock Music Hall.The Blackberry Bushes Stringband “honor old time and bluegrass tradition with modern homegrown illuminations,” according to a news release.

Birthday reception slated for Sinele’s 85th birthday

June 24, 2009 OIL TROUGH — Mabel Ford Sinele will celebrate her 85th birthday with a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. July 4 at Oil Trough City Hall.She was born July 5, 1924, near Cave City, to Howard and Lillie Burrow Ford. She graduated from Cave City High School and received a bachelor of arts in mathematics and social studies from Harding College (now Harding University). She taught for a year at Cave City School and for 27 years at Oil Trough High School.She married G.H. Sinele on May 29, 1944, in Cave City. They moved to Oil Trough on April 19, 1946, to live on and manage a farm.

June 24, 2009 A number of activities will be taking place this Saturday in conjunction with the Batesville Family Fun Fest. Gates open at 8 a.m. at Riverside Park. Free activities include Bounce houses provided by Lambert’s Bounce Houses, pony rides and petting zoo provided by Batesville Cold Storage and First Community Bank, water slide, food and craft vendors, 3-on-3 basketball, youth football clinic conducted by former Razorback standout Anthony Lucas for ages 7-14, skateboarding activities, water gun fight, Frisbee tossing and more.

‘Ed’ Ellison remembered

June 24, 2009 Edwin “Ed” Ellison enjoyed playing on computers, watching ball games, traveling and especially cozying up to his favorite pet, Cheri, the Alaskan cat.“My (family) left Cheri with us while they went to Egypt,” his wife, Ollie, said. “He didn’t really want her in the beginning, but after three weeks she was his cat. And she really, really misses him.”Ellison died Thursday in Batesville. He was 80.

Fletcher updates council

June 24, 2009 The county and city are in technical default on the Independence County Hydro Project, and to dig out of that hole the hydroelectric facility is going to have to start running at full capacity, according to coordinator Steve Fletcher.

Potts talks; Hicks walks

June 24, 2009 The Independence County Hydro Project Committee saw its share of electricity Tuesday evening as former Hydro Project Coordinator Rita Potts voiced her side of the ongoing issues surrounding the recent overtaking from ACA Guaranty.On a night where the committee listened to the progress of the newly hired coordinator, Stephen Fletcher, the meeting became charged when Potts asked the committee’s new chairman, Justice of the Peace Waymon Long, if she could make a few comments.
