Alcohol key factor in weekend arrests

July 9, 2009  After reportedly trying to dodge police to avoid a ticket, Kevin G. White, 29, of 75 Shultz Lane, was arrested on charges of fleeing, driving left of center, disregarding a stop sign, broken windshield, no proof of liability insurance and driving while intoxicated Friday evening.The arrest stemmed from a traffic stop made by Deputy Shawn Stephens on Mount Herman Road around 6 p.m.White said he didn’t have paperwork on the car because he had just recently bought it. White was given a court date of July 22.

Batesville High announces academic honors

July 9, 2009 Batesville High School was awarded the Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, it was announced at the school’s awards night on April 27.The award, based on the school’s test scores and the demographic makeup of the school, is the highest academic honor a public school can receive. BHS was the only high school in the state to receive the honor.Other awards included: James Eads, Taamasa Hyde and Kyle Cox, winners of the Batesville Daily Guard 2008 “design an ad” contest.

Midland teacher attends meeting on technology

July 9, 2009 Silver Spring, Md. — Karen Wells from Midland School District, along with 60 educators from across the country, participated in the Discovery Educator Network Leadership Council Symposium at the headquarters of Discovery Communications in Silver Spring, Md. The event was held June 25-26 and was hosted by Discovery Education, a division of Discovery Communications, whose networks include Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and the Science Channel.

July 9, 2009 Southside School Board meetsSOUTHSIDE — More than 170 non-resident students have requested to attend Southside Schools during the 2009-10 school year, according to new Superintendent Roger Rich. Rich told the school board during their regular meeting Monday night that about 140 of those have never attended the district’s schools. In other business, the board voted to:• accept a letter of resignation from Bonnie Young as a personal care aide and voted to hire Christy Williford to fill that position.

Court hears about grants, sex offenders

July 9, 2009 MELBOURNE — An ordinance disbursing funds from the Tobacco Prevention Program to fund the Izard County Hometown Health Coalition was approved by the Izard County Quorum Court members Tuesday at the courthouse.It is a 100 percent grant so no matching funds are required. Treva Engelhardt, a chairwoman of the Izard County Hometown Health Coalition, addressed the court to explain the need for the ordinance.

Girl enjoys giving instead of receiving

July 9, 2009 Alley Edwards couldn’t think of anything she wanted for her birthday. She didn’t want a doll or another toy. She had plenty. “I already had a lot of stuff in my room,” the 8-year-old said.Instead of thinking of herself, Edwards began thinking of others, particularly, the residents at Wood-Lawn Nursing Home in Batesville.

Law targets teens

July 9, 2009 LITTLE ROCK — A new age restriction for teenagers operating personal watercraft in Arkansas takes effect Friday, said Keith Stephens of the state Game and Fish Commission.“Rachel’s Law” raises the minimum age to 16 for individuals to legally operate a personal watercraft alone. The law is named after Rachel Rutherford, who died at age 15 in 2007 of injuries as the result of a personal watercraft accident on Lake Hamilton, Stephens said.
